Travelling with Bun

I’m going on a road trip for a couple of days to a cabin and I’m not sure if taking my bunny, Toby, with me is a good idea. it’s a 4 hour drive over the border.

I’m trying to get my brother to bunny sit for me, but he is requesting a set up at his place so he doesn’t have to check up on him twice a day at my place. I rebuttled that it’s stressful for a constant change in environment, but he suggests frequent visits to his home to make Toby more comfortable with the surroundings and people. He has never taken care of a pet before officially, so I’m not sure if this is the best Idea. He also has a child, whom has seen the rabbit and interacted with him before.

Is it worth paying for boarding for 4 days? I would still have to change his environment but at least it will be with knowledgeable rabbit people.

What are some suggestions that will make this work? Your thoughts on taking bunny on road trips?

What do you mean over the border – to a different country? I would want to make sure if that is the case…that you are allowed to bring your rabbit into the other country…I do believe it’s fine for US/Canada but not so sure US/Mexico that is if you are in the US.

I think boarding with rabbit knowledgeable people is a great idea – I used to board rabbits for friends and I think it eased their mind knowing someone with experience was boarding their buns.

I live in Canada and would be going into the states (washington state to be specific) for a short holiday.

Does anyone take their buns on holiday with them? or is that too stressful?

Sarita, so your friends dropped buns over at your house? How did the buns handle environment change?

I’d choose the rabbit savvy person any day over non-rabbit savvy. Missing those little signs that only someone who knows bunnies would notice would be worth the boarding fee and peace of mind to me. Your bunny may be just fine with you brother. I just look at my bunnies like I did with my son . . . I wouldn’t have left my son with a sitter who had no experience with children. I do tend to be the worrying type though so keep that in mind on relation to my opinion!

I prefer to leave my bunny in our home in her normal environment when I travel vs pet boarding. You can try calling your rabbit savvy vet to see if they have a bunny sitter recommendation. I just found out that many of the vet techs do pet sitting on the side for extra money.

Several of them have a “bunny sitter” list also.

Either way, it’s much better to choose a rabbit savvy person as JackRabbit said.

ooh interesting! I’ll have to call my vet to see if any of their tech’s do pet sitting on the side . I would be more inclined to pay them for the weekend to do that (even if it’s before and after their weekend shifts!). Our vet is not too far from home so it might be easy for them to drop by.

I was just worried that I would have to put him in a carrier and take him to a boarding place. Maybe for a longer vacation, but not for long weekend.

Thanks for your responses. I feel a little better about the situation.

Too bad for my brother and his kid, haha. Seemed like they would of really wanted to do it.
