traveling in pairs?

Hello!

I have been mommy to my bunny Velo for four months now and she is the light of my life. Due to certain circumstances I will have to move from South Africa to Belgium next year starting spring. I have been doing some research and unfortunately it is starting to look like I won’t be able to get her onto the cabin with me. All the airlines that service my area will allow cats and dogs up to 8kg but for some reason my little 1kg bunny will not be allowed. I have contacted all of the airlines to see if there is some leeway but so far I haven’t gotten the answer I am looking for.

I am currently working from home, so I socialize with Velo during the day whenever she needs attention so she does not feel lonely. But once the move is done I was planning on getting her a pal since I will probably start working in an office again and don’t want her to be alone all day.

Now seeing that she might need to travel as live cargo do you think it would be better to get a companion for her now? They can travel in the same kennel and might be able to comfort themselves. 

I’m just not sure if this is a good idea or not so any input would be much appreciated.

If you have the time to bond them, I would definitely do it now. To make it easier you can see if your humane shelter allows bunnies to visit and pick their own friend (not all do). It will be a lot less stressful for her to have a friend during the trip. It’s a point of reference and traveling is already stressful for rabbits, at least she has a friend (would you rather be put in a strange box by yourself or with a friend?). It’s usually easier to bond a girl to a boy, so it would be great if you can find one. Also, once you move everything will be new and you probably won’t have as much time to bond them since you will be working away from home.

Do you know if pets can actually go in a carrier together in cargo though??

I do know that if in the cabin, it can only be one rabbit per carrier. I would definitely keep looking into if it’s possible to have her in the cabin. It seems strange that they allow cats and dogs, but not rabbits. It may require more investigation.

In Canada, there is only one airline that accepts rabbits, but they allow 2 bonded pets to be in the same carrier as long as it fits the size maximum, so it might be the same for her. A lot of airlines only accept cats and dogs, even though less people are allergic to rabbits, they are small, and they don’t make any noise.
