Can anyone suggest any home help for a tooth that is trying to get infected? My stupid wisdom tooth does this every so often and I rinse it out with GSE and it usually clears up, but it takes a week or two. And things like orajel seem to only numb my tongue. I have heard clove oil works well. Any other things you guys know to try?

And I know, a dentist is needed. I need to have it pulled. But I can’t afford it til next month (don’t worry, if the bunnies got sick I have a way to take care of them… just not me ! ha). And.. I am a total whimp about the dentist too, so I keep putting it off. :s

Try tea tree oil. Your health food store may have some. (I know where to get it online but that won’t help you quickly.) It numbs the gums and is anticeptic and a whole bunch of other good things, … can’t spell the half I remember. Clove oil is also good, but I prefer teatree. Besides, the tea tree is truly multi-purpose, great on insect bites and bruises. You can also apply it undiluted directly to infected areas (and/or make a mouth wash using it) in this case to the gums, wouldn’t recommend doing that with undiluted clove oil.

You can also make a cup of tea with five or six whole cloves and a mug of boiling water (eight ounces). Let the cloves steep at least fifteen minutes.

My profound sympathies, and best of luck!

Ive heard that about Clove oil also but never tried it myself. A lot of people are put off by it because… it smells like the dentist. Lol

I like the benefits of tea tree also.
Another possibility is Manuka honey if you can find it.

If you can devise a way to pack something over the tooth with what ever you use, it might work better. Maybe try mixing an essential oil with soft wax??

Are you able to take ibuprofen?

Hopefully Beka will see this thread. With her dental knowledge, she may have some suggestions.

I would recommend you take a pain reliever preemptively, something anti-inflammatory if possible like ibuprofen. This isn’t always a good idea since too much is not good for your liver, but since it’s only for the short-term, it’s a good way to head off discomfort. Each morning, take something that is long-lasting. Take more in the evening if necessary. Once you are in pain, it takes longer for medication to take effect, so having a moderate amount in your system at all times can prevent those surprise “pain attacks”. Do not lay aspirin on the tissue near the tooth. This can cause burns and that will just aggravate the pain you’re already in.

Keep the area very, very clean. It might be uncomfortable to brush that tooth, but you need to remove food that is getting impacted around there.

If you have any (or can get some) sterile wrapped gauze squares, you can try folding them in quarters and gently biting down. The pressure may relieve some of the discomfort. Rinse with warm salt-water periodically throughout the day. You can also try placing an ice pack on the side of your face.

Is the wisdom tooth actually infected or is it just erupting into your mouth? Is the top chewing surface fully exposed, or is there still tissue covering it?

I do recommend you see a dentist next week, even if it’s only for an exam and one xray. The dentist will prescribe antibiotics if there is an infection, and then you can set-up an appointment for next month for the removal. They may also be able to work out a payment plan.

Please remember that I have no dental experience, but I just want to say if you try that, use brace wax. I use it for my braces, and it has saved me from a lot of pain. But it is fairly expensive, and seems to just dissolve in my mouth.

Thanks guys. The wisdom tooth is in as far as I can tell all the way, it grew in about two years ago and has off and on given me issues – when it grew in it didn’t remove all the gum from around it, so there was a flap of gum tissue sitting inside the I am not sure on the clinical term, the bowl of the tooth? Still attached to the main gum line. That piece of skin however is now missing, so I guess during the night I bit it off, the area hurts like crazy now… it had gotten a bit swollen and I bite it if not careful when it does that, but now I have the top wisdom tooth in as well and I guess while asleep it ended up being removed. Bright side, will make cleaning easier, since I don’t have to lift that flap of skin to brush it anymore. :s

Been cleaning it with a mixture of GSE and listerine, the GSE is a really strong anti-bacterial, but I will try the tea tree oil. I have some that I use to mix with jojoba for massages.

And yes I have some ibuprofen, I rarely take it cause I hate medicines, but I guess one or two won’t hurt.

And I still have two more wisdom teeth to grow in. I hate these things.

Definitely listen to Beka – she is a dental hygienist.

Also what works for me is that hydrogen peroxide mouthwash. I know what a toothache feels like too and you just cannot concentrate when you are in this kind of pain.

i hope you feel better soon.

                      Ouchhh!
I think tea tree oil is a mild anaesthetic too so it might give some relief.

This. I hope you can get the infection under control at least. Gum infection can lead to scary business.

                         This book is amazing.  http://www.curetoothdecay.com/

I don’t know what your issue is but if you are really committed, you can reverse decay.  I have myself for smaller cavities and I know people who have with larger ones.
Just sharing in case you are interested.  Dental pain is no fun.

It’s happened before, so I know I can get it settled in a few weeks. Maybe some of the things here will speed it up though.  The ibuprofen has been helping with the pain, I took two before I went to bed and it didn’t hurt too much to cause trouble sleeping.

Only way I could afford a dentist atm is to dip into my emergency pet care loans and I don’t wanna do that, then i’d have no way to cover if a pet got sick. And I’d rather be in a little pain than risk them being in a potentially fatal illness. So, I can wait.
