Our second bunny Aurelia (the bun with white eye lining in my profile pic) has been with us for ~2 months. She was de-sexed already when we adopted her (at 3-4 month of age I guess), and she just turned 6 month old. Since she’s with us, she’s learnt how to pee in the litter box. She still make pee accidents but very rare.
However, she poops tons outside the box! Everyday we pick up at least 50-80 of poops, there’s no particular patterns,
- she drops random individual poops when hopping around with excitement, this I can understand, and I hope this will go away once she’s older
- when she naps in a bunny-hen position, she will leave a group/pile of 10+ poops
- this pooping behaviour doesn’t have a favorite/regular spot, it’s basically wherever she feels like it
This happens both in the cage (most of the daytime) and free-roam sessions (3 hours every night) .
They’re both dwarf sized bunnies. They share two litter boxes, each box being twice of a bunny size (when both of them are in the same box, it’s a big squeezy though). We change the litter every two days – I wondered whether the boxes are too “dirty” for her by the 2nd day but if she’s willing to pee in there, doesn’t it mean she’s fine with its cleanness? Whenever we see poops, we’ll pick them up; we do a complete clean+wipe+change of bedding every week. However she haven’t had any improvement
Our older bunny Augustus has been having 80% success litter manner since training day 5 when he was at her age, he didn’t have different habit for pee and poop either
I hesitate about the idea of restricting them more because she’s very hyper and seek human interaction in a crazy way, their cage is big enough but whenever I’m home she will start biting and shaking the cage, even climb and jump tirelessly (she can grab the grids for quite a while, looks like a spiderman, it looks totally ridiculous), I worry she will injure herself that way
I was wondering if there’s anything else I can do, or is it just an age thing and all I can do is patiently waiting for her to grow up?
