So I keep hearing that people make hay toys by using empty toilet paper rolls and filling them with hay.  In fact, when I adopted him, he had one in his cage at the shelter.  My guy loves chewing cardboard so I am curious if the affects of him eating the roll more than the hay would out way it’s purpose – especially since my guy is currently recovering from a bad case of stasis.

You could try while you’re monitoring him. If you see him starting to consume the toilet roll, you could abort mission, so to speak. I sometimes give my buns a toilet roll stuffed with hay and some pellets in the middle. They often chew some of the cardboard toilet roll, but they’re not devouring it.

Mine will usually eat a little of the toilet roll but not the whole thing. Ingesting some cardboard will not hurt a bun, so long as it’s not tons and tons and they still eat their hay. It’s all plant fiber, after all!

A little nibble likely won’t hurt anything. Do you pinch the ends together?
