Toffee – Bulging Eye

Ms. Toffee’s left eye is bulging out – dropped her off at the vet’s this morning.

I had noticed her left eye looking a bit weird this past week and she has had poopy butt (which is not unusual) but it wasn’t until this morning when I cleaned her butt that I noticed the whole side of her head seemed to be bulging – yikes.

She’s also been more picky in her diet – this is not unusual however due to her dental problems but she won’t even eat her acidophilus tablet treats lately.

Of course all this talk of glaucoma has made me wonder if that is her problem since she is 10 years old.

Do you think possible theres an abscess there?
I hope whatever the cause, it can be remedied quickly. She seems to be a strong one, the way she comes thru her ongoing dentals.

Could be protein build up. We have a bird where I work that has protein build up from cataracts. It makes his eye all puffy. Not sure how it all works, but we have to put drops in his eye.

Just spoke with the vet and she said it’s retrobulbar abscess due to the chronic dental problems and she said we can do one of two things – surgery to remove the eye and some of the problem teeth and try to drain the abscess or try pen-g shots and zeniquin along with buprenex and metacam for a week to see if that helps.

Obviously I am going for the second and see if that helps and we will re-evaluate in a week. We don’t think putting a 10 year old rabbit through that surgery is a good idea.

I have to agree. at 10 years old that is pretty traumatic, I hope that the other option works. I will keep praying for you and Toffee. 🙁 <3

I was wondering if that was it, because that’s exactly how we found about Mandy’s tooth abscess, her eye and just below was swollen. I’d definitely try the less invasive shots route, good luck and vibes for Toffee!!

Well I gave Ms. Toffee her meds last night but I think I will increase her metacam dosage to twice a day. The vet said to not let the bulging eye bother me, but it really does.

The vet said we would know in a week whether the meds are working and if it just gives her relief even for a bit that is good. She isn’t ready to euthanize her and I wasn’t ready to make that decision yesterday either. I know the meds aren’t going to solve the problem though and it would just be a temporary fix.

Of course this morning when I was cleaning her pen, Bobby had to run in there to explore and Ms. Toffee still has enough spunk to get annoyed with him – she doesn’t care for him in her pen – Bogie on the other hand doesn’t care when Bobby runs into his pen when I’m cleaning.

I am so sorry. The bulging eye would bother me too. It seems it would be easier if it were glaucoma. It’s educational though to read your and KK’s experience with bulging eye differences between an abscess and glaucoma. My ONLY experience with glaucoma is just noticing the eye getting bigger, but nothing around the eye got bigger. Where it seems in your and KK’s case having the abcess makes the area around the eye seems to show a swelling as well.

I know that our decisions about how to move forward with more drastic measure definitely changes when our bunnies are in their more senior years.

I so hope the meds offer some relief for Ms. Toffee! Sending healing vibes!

Here’s a cute picture of Bobby & Ms. Toffee – I’m very concerned about Ms. Toffee though and would appreciate any vibes.  I am only on the 4th dosage of pen-g shots and zenquin but she doesn’t seem any better really – still being very very picky about food and the eye is still bulging quite a bit.

I dread to have to make a decision soon, but I know I will.  I just don’t want her to suffer.

I’m not feeling very hopeful about Ms. Toffee :~( The only thing she will eat are the Oxbow Veggie Treats. No poops yesterday when I came home but some this morning – I suspect she is in pain because I give her pain meds in the evening – decided today to do it in the morning and at night. Eye is still bulging profusely…I feel bad for her.
