Tobramycin

Has anyone ever had their vet prescribe Tobramycin eye drops to be put in the nose for a rabbit with Pseudomonas? I have heard of Gentimicin, Amikacin, and Ciprofloxacin, but can’t seem to find too much on Tobramycin. Just curious! Thanks in advance!

Hmm, that’s interesting. I’m not sure how you get the drops in there without getting it in his mouth. There’s a risk to the kidneys if it’s ingested orally. I’ve only heard of it being used in eye drops for rabbits.

Just an update here-I asked my vet about this and he said that although this would be some ingestion of the drug, it was too minimal to be a risk. That being said, my bunny has had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at him for this infection, so honestly, the risk is not necessarily outweighing the benefit of not trying. We have tried Ciprofloxacin, Gentimicin, and Neopolydex eye drops for his nose in addition to Amikacin, saline, and Gentimicin nebulization and Baytril and Orbax systemics.

A few days ago, I noticed something sticking out of his nose and pulled out a nearly 5 inch long piece of hay. Since then, his discharge has been next to none which is great, but I am not sure if this is due to the hay or Tobramycin as the hay came out about a day after I started the new drug. My main goal here is to suggest that Tobramycin could potentially be effective if anyone else has this problem. It is was they use to treat Pseudomonas in human patients, and it might be worth asking the vet about if your bunny has an infection.

Sometimes vets have to experiment when other treatments aren’t working. My vet did this with Wooly. She laced Oti-Clens ear cleaning solution with Baytril and had me put that in his ear when his (chronic) sinus infection invaded his ear.

Wow! That’s great that your vet thinks outside the box! It’s really hard to find a great vet for small pets!

I have heard of using eye/ear drops in the nose before. I think it was gentamicin someones vet prescribed. So, of the same family as Tobramycin. Tobra is supposed to be the most effective against pseudonomas, I believe.

Are you able to add it to the eyes also? So it comes down that pathway also?

I haven’t heard of giving it in the eyes, but I would imagine maybe it would be effective that way since they are ophthalmic drops. I will have to ask my vet-he definitely has runny eyes. He hasn’t had a runny nose in a while, but suffered a stasis episode. After coming back from the vet, he still wasn’t eating, so my vet suggested trying NeoPolyDex drops to help swelling in his nose. It improved his eating and drinking, but I’m not sure if it’s because it is a steroid. His bathroom habits went down the tubes, but I assume it’s because steroids increase urination frequency. Oddly enough, shortly after I started the steroids, he became stuffy again. I backed him off after he ate well for a few days, but I am now seeing white discharge again. I am hoping just being dogged with the Tobramycin will help.
