Timothy Hay

Does anyone know where I can get bulk timothy hay that isn’t Standlee brand. We have 1 Giant Flemish rabbit and 6 guinea pigs. We go through hay really fast. We had Standlee Timothy hay and our rabbit got sick from it. We switched to Kaytee brand and he is better, but it is so pricey when you go through it so fast.

Are there any farms in your area that sell timothy hay? Seems to me that’s the best source for getting hay by the bale (which I assume is what you mean by bulk), unless there’s a feed store that sells plain bales (as opposed to the Standlee compressed bale). If you were in the Washington, DC area, I’d refer you to the rabbit rescue I adopted my buns from, Friends of Rabbits, which sells mixed hay from local farms by the 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and full bales anywhere from $6 to $24.

I have been trying to find a farm near me that has timothy but seems like most only have Alfalfa and Timothy mix. Thank you. I will keep looking

Not sure where you’re located, but I get all my hay from Sierra Valley Hay. The quality is excellent, and definitely cheaper than buying small bags at the pet store.

You can also get Oxbow in big boxes from Dr. Foster’s and Smith. They are also good quality, I used to use them before Sierra Valley was recommended to me.

I wonder, if you explained to them what and for whom you needed it, would a local farmer be willing to do a deal with you to produce a bale (or a partial bale) of timothy-only hay for you?

Drs. Foster and Smith has already been mentioned, but that is a good place to get hay. It’s where I get mine. The prices are less than at pet stores. Right now, they have free shipping with any size order. At other times, it is free with a $19 order. In the past, you had to spend $49 to get free shipping. Although their shipping charges aren’t that high anyway. The orders come quickly and the hay is always fresh, unlike some that I’ve seen in stores. I get Oxbow hay and American Pet Diner Hay.

They have up to 50 pound bags of Oxbow Timothy hay, for $53,12. They also have 25 pound bags, 9 pound bags and small bags.

American Pet Diner has 2 kinds of Timothy, high fiber (first cut) and Timothy Gold (second cut). I get both kinds. It comes in a small bag or in a 5 pound box. The Gold is on sale right now.
