Time to neuter.. nervous

Hi! Before I got my bun young and I knew that he would need to be neutered when he became old enough. I kind of just decided to go with the flow and let him tell me when he was ready for it. He’s five months old now so I’ve been looking out for it, and last night, he told me. I was getting ready for work and he was running around following me as per usual and then started playing with my leg.. not humping it, just kind of.. being more attached than usual, almost hugging it. I thought that was weird, so kind of knew right then and there. It was time for me to go to work anyways, so I picked him up to return him to his cage, but when I flipped him over, well, lets just say I was shocked. Bunnies are a LOT more.. “well endowed” then I would have thought. Thank goodness I pick him up a certain way because I wouldn’t want to hurt him when it was like that. So now I’m looking into neutering him. I planned to have him neutered at the Humaine Society so I’m not worried about that, I’m more worried about the outcome of the surgery. Will he change personality? Will he be in pain? Complications? Will his love affair with my leg start and end with last night or will this continue after the surgery? He also hasn’t started to spray yet (so I think..) so will he be starting to anytime soon? And if he does, does that stop after surgery? (not looking forward to that.. lol) I know neutering is the way to go, and I’m doing my research, but testimonials are always nicer than sites that try to guestimate the outcome of everything and I know there are tons of people here who have been through this surgery. He’s my baby and I’m just a nervous wreck of a mother! Any advice, stories, comments, etc. are appreciated!!

I have two neutered males, they’ve not changed their personalities.

His love affair with your leg could go on a couple of weeks – a month (I’ve read 8 weeks somewhere) after neutering, but then the hormones will subsceed and your leg will probably be just another human leg again, not a sexy bunny girl. My bunny Bam fell in love with my German Shepherd and he kept it up for 2 weeks after his neuter, then lost interest in her all togeather. He never sprayed urine, not all bunnies do, but my other one was a sprayer and it’s incredible how high up the pee can reach. You don’t want that, so have your boy neutered soon.

One of mine I had to feed pellet-slur with a syringe the day after his neuter, the other one started eating the minute he came home. Same clinic, same vet, same meds and all, just two different rabbits. Both bunnies were fine in a couple of days, as if nothing had happened.

 I nuetered my boy at about the same age. They called me to pick him up about an hour after he woke up. It went fine and he was eating fine when we got home. By the second day he was angrily demanding to be freed from his cage. On day three I let him out for a little while and had to put him back in his cage because he wanted to be his usual jumping and zooming self. He had pain meds once a day for 3 days that he took easily cause he is a little weirdo and thinks I am giving him a treat any time I offer him anything (which is good too, he also thinks antibiotics and benebac are treats).

I don’t think his attitude changed much. He never sprayed before/after. He stopped digging and trying to rip up my carpet eventually.

From my experience, there was no notable personality change. Except the humping subsided. My boys didn’t seem to be in much pain either and wanted supper as soon as they got home.

My experience was similar to the others. The boys both bounced back very quickly. They ate fine that evening…maybe a little drowsy…but in a couple days – they were running around like normal. And personality wise – I didn’t really notice a change. But their behavior improved.
