Thumping suddenly

Long story short, I was doing my homework in bed and suddenly i hear a big THUD. Of course it startled the crap out of me, so I go and peek over to what my bunnies are doing in their cage. They just seemed as startled as I was so I figured it was a noise from outside because I have my window open. Then I go back to doing my homework. THUD. I go check AGAIN, they seem to be eating their hay or chilling in their litter box so I ignore it and go back to my homework. then again THUD. I go peek over ONCE AGAIN and I see Luna in the litter box just sitting there. I get suspicious so I stare into the cage for a good 5 minutes and I finally catch her thumping. What does this mean? There is no imminent danger.??? They are in the safety of their home/cage. She was looking directly at Venus and thumped. Maybe they had an argument?? Any ideas anybody?? This is the first time I heard a bunny thump.

Keep in mind they can hear a huge range of sounds we can’t-so they could easily be hearing something that is too quiet, or even just inaudible to you. I believe we hear 200-20000, they can hear up to 40000 and I think they hear ultrasound too.
They might also be sensitive to something that smells.
Was anyone frying anything? Lots of rabbits go wonky if they hear that sizzle.

Not to worry, as long as they go back to normal state soon and aren’t up all evening upset. Just watch for eating again and laying down.

They are used to the sounds that go on when I open the windows because I always open them. The litter I use for their litter box is bad at odor control, so until my new odor control brand litter is delivered, I open the windows to air out my room.
I wasn’t cooking anything… They live in my room, which is on the 2nd floor while the kitchen is on the first. I also wasn’t eating anything in my room, so I don’t think it’s the smell. I doubt they can hear my neighbors cooking if anything…. Most of my neighbors don’t open their windows especially where the kitchen is.

Luna stopped the thumping, but I really got scared. I thought somebody broke into my home and they were warning me or something. I’m still iffy on checking out my door because I’m so nervous :/ My housemate isn’t back from vacation yet, so this raised red flags for me

There was once when one if the pipes that’s located on the roof burst and the water is seeping thru the wall and ceiling and the water was slowly flowing down the wall to the floor. But the water was more than 10 feet away from my bunny and she thumped non stop and went thrashing her area trying to get out. The ruckus caught my attention and then only i noticed the burst pipe but there were no sound or anything. Just water slowly flowing down the wall.

Im amazed at how they can detect danger even if it’s only water that’s about to reach her area

Update: They seem happy and comfy. Luna stopped the thumping. I guess something raised her alarm that I didn’t notice.
I checked around my house. Everything seems okay. No intruders. So we are all safe

For a while after we got Blue, if a car drove by with its lights on, Blue would thump. He would let off a few thumps after flying under his balcony in his cage before it would rain too

Oh I see. It wasn’t raining or anything. Luna hasn’t thumped since I’ve posted about it on this forum. I think she might have been a lil mad at Venus or a lil scared of something.

For over 10 years, Bunny slept in our bedroom. Often under the bed, sometimes on the bedroom floor.  Sometimes during the night, she would thump. A loud thump.  Most occasions it was a one or two thump and no more.  I have no idea why she thumped.  Maybe an animal under the crawl space of our house or an animal prowling around outside a window.  One time during the day, she was on the bedroom floor, and someone walking their dog on the sidewalk let the dog loose and it ran up …on the outside..to our bedroom window…Bunny started thumping…she detected the dog!  How I don’t know. 

During her 10+ years of living in our house, there were two times where she started thumping to alert for a real danger.  It wasn’t just a one or two thumps..she started continuously non stop thumping. 

If you want to sleep and feel safe, put a bunny in your bedroom.  They have excellent hearing and also good sense of smell. If you and your bunny have bonded, your bunny will regard you as another bunny and give you thumping alarms when there’s a perceived danger.
