Thumper getting spayed tomorrow :(

My thumper is getting spayed tomorrow. So nervous! I hope everything goes smoothly !I feel so bad for her. I’m scared something will happen to her on the operating table ! I just want her to get through it and hope she recovers smoothly, easily and quickly. how long does it take for her to recover and do you have any tips for me? i’m actually getting it done at the MSPCA because they do it for $75 which is great, because all the quotes I got from vets were $300 and up! They have a special doctor that only does rabbits,and they only do rabbits on certain days which is Tuesdays. I guess they say because it’s a quieter day and because rabbits can get stressed ,so they wanted to be as calm as they can. I’m also questioning the spay now ,because she has been so cuddly and so sweet ,she comes and lays in our laps now ,she always comes over for cuddles and she’s so good about only go in the bathroom in her cage. hope I’m doing the right thing.

I definitely think you’re doing the right thing! In my experience, buns litter habits actually seem to improve after desexing. If an experienced rabbit vet is doing the spay that takes a lot of worry out of it. I’m praying that all goes well and wishing Thumper a speedy recovery.

As it’s been said you are doing what’s best for her! There are so many health benefits for her.

My little one is in being spayed today. It is certainly stressful on u with them being away. I had the same worries as she wa cuddled on my lap last night or cuddling with me at the vet this morning

You definitely ARE doing the right thing, please don’t doubt that

I had a lot of worries about my Buttercup’s spay so I totally understand, if you look for the thread I made about it, there was a lot of useful tips given to me! It varies of course but my Buttercup was back to herself 2 days later. Make sure you get some pain killers, I had to specifically ask my vets for some as they don’t usually just prescribe them. I gave her the full 5 days of pain relief to be on the safe side – I actually put it on pieces of lettuce and she gobbled it up and even licked the bowl! Make sure she is kept warm – I tried a snuggle safe heat pad suggested to me by Bam and unfortunately Buttercup wasn’t interested lol so we put her cage near a radiator and she warmed right up. If you don’t already, you might want to try a water bowl rather than a bottle. Buttercup – who had previously snubbed a water bowl – drank TONS from a bowl after her spay and now she rarely uses her bottle.

Yes, this is the best for her health. I totally understand your fears, but it’ll be so much better for her. Intact females develop a high chance of getting cancer in their ladybits after the age of 4. Spaying will protect her against that.

You’ll fibnd lots orf useful tips and pointers there. Like don’t fast the bun before surgery, get a snuggle safe or hand warmers or a hot water bottle so you can warm her up when she comes home in case she needs it, serve water in a bowl not just in a bottle, have Critical Care available in case she doesn’t have an appetite (Critical Care is a powdered food that vets often sell. If you can’t get it, pellets soaked in water will do). You also need a feeding-syringe. Her favorite greens, like parsley and cilantro are good to have on hand to entice her to eat.

Thank You everyone. I don’t have a syringe and don’t have the time to get one, her surgery is at 7am so early! But I will try to get the greens for her etc….
I have a corn bag that o can heat up for her to keep her warm. Hope she doesn’t chew on it ? Shes getting it done at the mspca so I hope they give painkillers to me after for her. I will definitely read through that thread! How long does surgery usually last I wonder

My girl was spayed today, she was at my vets from 9am-4pm. My vet gave her pain med shot right before surgery and gave me Additional meds for the next few days. He said it’s not always needed but I requested it, it was only an extra $10. My vet had me bring her favorite blanket, or toys to cuddle with and had me bring food and hay with her. After surgery they held her while she was waking up, once she was awake they put her in her cage with her blanket, food and hay. When I called to check on her at three she had just begun eating her hay. They make sure all their buns are eating before they send them home. She settled in pretty quick at home and was munching hay and drinking right away. She had also gone potty with in a few hours of being home.

I was all set to stay up with her all night but she is doing great. I prepared for the worst and everything has gone great. I’m sure your vet will do great and I’m sure you will be an amazing bunny parent and take care of your groggy baby when she gets home

If you are worried about getting a syringe, stop at your local pet store while she is at the vet. If they don’t have something in small animal check their bird section, for hand feeding supplies, and check with their kitten stuff

The MSPCA did a great job with my guy’s neuter! They had him immediately after since we adopted him from there and the neuter was scheduled right before the 4-H fair so since we both had to be on site we didn’t feel like it was responsible to bring him home and then leave him with someone for 3 nights. However when we brought him home (a week after neuter) they said he did great and didn’t really have any issues! Super professional about the whole process there! ( I also think they use a special vet for rabbits who has experience with exotics and thats why it’s only one day a week)

They said to pick her up anytime after 2 o’clock ,so I will go get her when the kids get out of school. they said they will only call me if something bad happens so hopefully she does OK , because they did say there is a chance for them to die in surgery?They Had me sign a paper, so hopefully it’s just a precaution ,because how do I explain that to my kids! I’m so worried for her. Poor thing!

There’s always a slight risk when using anaesthetic – but no matter how small, they have to make you aware of it. The consent form is just to protect themselves really, it’s proof that they’ve warned you what could happen. So, it’s just precaution  

I’ve got to phone my vets at 2PM (less than an hour to go!) Can’t wait to hear that he’s okay.

So I just brought her home. They gave me critical care , syringes, medicine directions etc! The mspca is awesome! I’m very impressed! Right now she’s super sleepy, I guess they’ve already gave her some critical care. They told me to offer her veggies, hay and pellets tonight. She’s super sleepy and just laying in her cage, she only nibbled on one piece of arugula. What should I look out for in the mean time ?

Glad she’s back home! Make sure she is kept nice and warm. Keep an eye out for any excessive grooming of the area and of course monitor whether she drinks/pees. If she’s not drinking much, soak her veggies so she gets some hydration (that’s what I’m doing for Peanut!) Expect some odd poops for the next few days but they should settle once the anaesthetic has fully left her system and she’s off pain meds. When Buttercup was spayed she only nibbled on one or two bits of hay and at around 4am I woke up to her eating a tiny piece of crunchy lettuce. She ate much better the next day.

I just put water on her arugula! She ate about 8 pieces of my hand! Then she didnt want anymore. Thanks for the tip!

Oh Im glad to read the update that she is home. Healing {{{vibes}}} for your girl.
How long has it been since the surgery now?

Also pop a bowl of water right next to her. I found my girls drank right away when I did that. They hadn’t wanted to move to go over to it. Either feeling unsteady from the anaesthetic, or uncomfortable in the abdomen, understandably!

She’s already peed and pooped so I’m happy about that, but now I’m
Worried. So I gave her the meta-cam like they told me to and they told me to give her three or four syringes of critical care after the medicine this morning. I was able to get two syringes in her and then she got loose from my burrito and kept hopping away from me ! so I’m so worried that she might’ve hurt her self or overstrained/overworked herself because she kept running away! She finally found her way into her cage, but she kept hoppong away and hiding ,I’m worried that was too much exercise for her I didn’t mean for her to squirm out she hated the critical care! I’m
A horrible bunny mom ? And now I mixed all the critical care and I don’t think I can give her anymore because she hates it

They never take to taking the syringe feeds very well. If she eating stuff on her own, I wouldn’t worry to much about the CC. Once the mixed stuff thickens, you could offer it in a bowl and see if she’ll come around to eating it that way.

ok i just noticed her munching a little bit of hay so hopefully that’s a good sign and I noticed a couple of Pee spots in her cage, I’m worried that all that hopping didn’t screw up her incision. she hasn’t had any interest in pellets though only the hay and some arugula

Buttercup wasn’t interested in pellets that much the day after, she had copious amounts of lettuce though! Try and get a look at the incision if you can, I’m sure it’s okay though. Just have a look for peace of mind.
