thoughts on antibiotic impregnated beads??

my rabbit victoria has a tooth abscess and it unfortunately spread to her bone. theres now a small little hole in her jaw. the vet discovered it about 2-3 weeks ago. i really want to have surgery done on her to place the impregnated beads. i dont really know much about it, but i will research more. but apparently this helps a lot. i was wondering if anyone knows how much this would cost? im currently out of the country so im not able to call my vet. but if anyone had experience with this, please tell me how much!! also, is antibiotic impreganted beads the right way to handle the situation? or is there another type of surgery i can have done on her? i just wanna make sure this is a safe option. thxx❤️

I have a 1 1/2 year old newzeland female who had a huge tooth root abscess a year ago, which is what your bun has. she has had about 5 surgeries to fix this. The first two, the vet didn’t get out all of the infected teeth and infection in the bone and impregnanted beads into her jaw after. Also, the bacteria was strepto-something so anerobic. The abscess never went away, it returned so I went to A&M and they have fixed the issue. First off, how big is the abscess? can you feel it? and is it on the top or bottom jaw? The top jaw is harder to fix.

I know this is costly but honestly what I have done is  the following and it worked and she is almost fully rid of the infection 1 year later

1. get a CT of the jaw to see how big the abscess is and how deep it has penetrated the bone- it will help the vet know how much to deride of the infection and dead bone. Alot of times, bad teeth cause abscesses

2. the vet should require pen-g shots  ( under skin only, orally will kill gi tract) once a week, a week before surgery , and enrofloxcin (2x a day) for a week( depending on how deep it is)

3. surgery, I have done research and sometimes the beads are ineffective, it depends on the bacteria found( if it is aerobic- then beads should work) if it is anerobic- meaning you need deep penetration to kill bacteria- the only thing that will work is Pen-g, now remember you will need to do probiotics the whole time on Pen-g since it is an antibiotic and can hurt the GI tract- NEVER give orally, if your vet suggests that, seriously run and find an actual exotic vet. House Rabbit Society has lists of qualified exotic vets for every state

4. you will continue PenG shots once a week for a couple of months to make sure the abscess dies. Also enroflaxin( orally) daily for months, I know it costs a lot now but learn from me, make sure you have a exotic vet so you only spend the money 1 times rather 2 times like me.

Xrays don’t show the penetration of the infection. I encourage you to do a lot of research like I have, you have to be the advocate for the bun and tell doctors what to do.

Depending on what the cause is( infection or tooth) you might have to have dental trimmings for the opposing teeth, I am going to school to be an exotic vet I hope this helps!
