I find dried grasshoppers. At least one large one every other day. I saw Deirdra eating one, how gross. It was crunchy.

In My current batch – not so good winter harvest:
a 1 inch thick 12 inch long stick
weird dried pod flowers
clumps of roots and dirt

So far no dead critters!

found all kind of stuff in KAYTEE brand hay… not supposed to be in there. things like plastic rings, plastic, rope, flower buds with spikes that will stick to your fingers [dangerous for bunny’s intestines], dirt, roots, small stones. 

no dead snakes or rodents, yet…?!

LOL. I guess, BB’s hay you can buy on here is pure and checked but Kaytee obviously isn’t.
My hay is local from a hay farm so it is in bales. There is no way they can avoid wrappping up the locusts, they are so abundant.

I get my hay from the rabbit rescue I volunteer for.. I also do some of the bagging of the hay, so I know whats in it

Even when I dry my own grass from my yard it has the hoppers in it. They ‘jump’ in, you know?

My rescue has h big barn – the hay comes right from the farm to the rescue.
I typically get a 1/2 a bail.
It is not the same as store bought hay.

I think it might have been last year, when I just had Archie I believe, I was cleaning out his litter and there was a dead flattened mouse in   Needless to say we switched where we got our hay (plus there was too many weeds and flowers in it…it was more horse hay I think) and the place we’re getting it now hasn’t had anything in theirs.  Although we may switch in the summer when ads are posted for hay because when we pick it up there, their dog runs around and it looks like it might attack (fur all straight up and barking) so it’s a bit scary…but hey for $3 a bale we could lose a hand right?

Just make sure it’s not that hand that you use to stock up the hay racks with… three dollars, that’s outlandish cheap! A complimentary mouse is definitely bad deal. I have mouse traps all over my hay shed in the fall just in case.

Yeah, I’m mlucky…never found anything. I do buy the “fancy bagged hay”, and I think I don’t want to try baled hay now.

Let’s see…mostly those little cigarette beetles. They’re oval shaped brown buggers and most of them wind up flying around the room and landing in my light fixture glass. >.< I have caught them crawling in the bun's pens though, and that hacks me off.
Mostly I find things like larger weeds…nettles mostly. Or roots. Since it’s a mass produced product, they really can’t check it for everything…but I would be disturbed if I found a mouse in it…yech!

I can’t wait for good weather, when our hayseed blooms in the yard and I get nice, fresh green grass for my bunnies. Mimzy is especially fond of it. No pesticides, freshly picked and delicious! ^_^

Yeah that hay was free (from my brother-in-law’s in-laws farm), I forgot that one time there was a cricket in there too! ALIVE!  It actually crawled out the tub full of hay and went under our hot water tank.  It was soo loud and annoying and I looked everywhere, went down there with the flashlight and stood there for 5 min. waiting for it to churp.  I thought that thing was huge and it was so tiny!  Took me like 3 days to find it   That mouse was probably already in the hay since it was dead…and flat   Wasn’t the best hay but that’s what ya get for free.

A corpse like a dead mouse can infect hay with botulism. I guess, your bunnies had a guardian angel.

I think the last thing I found was some roots but I may have been dreaming. I think I would be more concerned about finding things like shoes or socks or something rather than something organic…I mean, it is grass after all. But mostly my hay lately has been pretty clean, just some leaves and grasses and I’m fine with that. Just wish I would find a diamond ring in my hay stash.

  I think I might have posted about it but no one ever mentioned that.  Glad nothing happened!  Next time I see a dead mouse I’ll know what to do but hopefully this hay won’t have that.

I think it develops more in the round bales where rodents can get wrapped up tightly in the core and rot. But if you find a dead bird or rodent in any hay, discard of that hay.

Before I changed who supplies my hay for my bunnies and the neighbors horse I found some pretty weird things. Combs, a shoe, Snakes (I am petrified of wild snakes!), a dead mouse (that hay went bye bye as soon as I cut the binds), a live bird, and the weirdest was a tv remote

When I was a kid I remember finding a dried up garter snake in a hay bale- it must have gotten killed and baled- and it dried out.  Yuck.

And I have read these stories here online occasionally about finding stuff in baled hay (like horse hay- large bales)- so our first bale we got for the bunnies I was pulling out handfuls and filling the hay bin for inside- and I was on edge just waiting for something- and all of a sudden I was convinced a heard a “squeak”- so I made my husband check the bale.  There was nothing there- so it was my imagination that had me convinced there was a live mouse in the hay.  And to this day I still have not found anything other than some hay to me that looks reedier or stalkier- but the bunnies seem to like that best.  So caution- so not let your imagation get the best of you- I freaked myself out over nothing- and I am not even afraid of mice- I just don’t like to be surprised or startled by them (and the thought of the poo/pee in hay).
