Unfortunatley it’s not Santa Claus!  It’s a squirrel…Etienne is going to check the screen up on the roof.  I have a feeling he chewed through the screen.

At first I thought it was a bird – this happened a few years ago and we fixed the screen but Etienne said it’s a squirrel.

The sad thing is he’s stuck.  I tried opening the flue thinking it was a bird.  I can deal with a bird and getting a bird out – I don’t really like having a bird flying around my house either though because I’m afraid of any diseases he could carry that could infect my cockateil but I was successful getting a few live birds out that time and sadly a few dead ones.

An injured and frightened squirrel I’m not able to deal with though – it’s sad though he keeps chattering and throwing himself against the side of the chimmney and I know he wants out – he’s stopped for now.  I’m sure he’s not going to make it and I cannot get him out even if I wanted to.  After I realized it was a squirrel I left the flue closed.

I guess it’s what these little animals get for being so destructive…I hope that doesn’t sound cruel, but they are extremely destructive and can cause alot of damage to homes.

Oh no! Squirrels are such little troublemakers! We had one nesting in our dryer vent at one point. Can you not coax him out with peanuts?

I can’t even see him. I also just don’t want to chance having him in my house and frightening my rabbits and destroying my house. I have a feeling he perished now.

The chattering and throwing himself just freaked me out.

I have to make sure the screen is secure so no more animals perish in there.

If he has perished, he will stink…

i made a screen for a spot in basement ceiling where a duct comes in. I just used three overlapping layers, staggered, of poultry netting.

This is a big problem up here too, although I think I find more evidence of termites chewing through our walls, or wasps, than squirrels.
Oh dear, I hope the poor little thing has just calmed down and can be rescued, rather than he died. I know they are capable of being pests, but I still like squirrels. Wouldn’t want one living in my chimney though.
Good luck to you! Tell Etienne to be careful, if he is anything like my husband, so that he does not surf off the roof. *nods* At least there is no snow to deal with, right?

oh dear. poor squirrel. i was at odds with my neighborhood squirrels when they decided to chew a hole in my soffit and live in my attic. i then started the “squirrel relocation program” which consisted of me in rubber gloves, a live trap and a car ride to the country. i was so mad at the damage they caused but my heart melted when i’d catch one and see it up close terrified. i hope you get the little guy out soon sarita. alive or not. so he doesn’t have to struggle anymore. he sealed his own fate falling into your chimney.
