Being Ms. Paranoid, I called the vet to double check the appointment for Monday and to inquire whether the fees included Critical Care.

After reading (which may be the end of me..), it appears that *if* the stuff is needed it is needed ASAP.. no time for Amazon orders and such..

I also asked if they did a quick well bunny check prior to surgery or whatnot.  The receptionist acted shocked that she was coming in as a new patient, sight unseen, but then connected me to the woman who scheduled it.  She said there shouldn’t be a need for Critical Care since the bunnies generally will eat once awake but they didn’t carry it to start with.  I was just going to get some there to be safe..

They also said they could take a quick look at Fiona’s front teeth and if there was trimming needed (she has one bottom one that is shorter than the other) they could do that while she’s under the anesthesia.  Evidently our get to know each other meeting with the vet will be when I take her in.

They say at my mortality inquiry (per the surgical assistant that was asked), that they haven’t lost a bunny but being the number cruncher I almost asked for numbers they had done during the surgical assistant’s time there. I didn’t go there.. I figured they thought I was nuts enough to start with..

So.. the question is, should I order some Critical Care just to have it on hand?  I sorta view it as having Pedialyte on hand for a sick baby..  If unopened, does it have a decent shelf life?

        Thanks for any thoughts..

Well if the vet has it onhand just ask them to buy some just in case.

            They don’t carry it.

I’ll check with another vet and if no luck, I’ll just order some today.

Not sure where you are located but I got a package from Pet-supplies Plus here in Michigan. Maybe call around some pet stores and see if they carry it.

I ordered some from the binkybunny store, and the shelf life of a closed packet is “best before January 2015”. So if you want to keep it on hand all the time, you will have to resupply each year (assuming you don’t use it before then).

It feels nice to have for unexpected situations, but from my own experience, and from what I hear, spays are pretty safe. I would focus on relaxing about it.

In a pinch, you can mash up pellets and mix them with something so it can be force fed through a syringe.

I ordered the little package from Amazon just in case.. $11 for peace of mind for a year isn’t so bad! I did read something about mashing up pellet as well. I spend a lot of time on my Kindle reading rabbit stuff. Wow.. lots of info on bunnies.

Here’s a pellet mash recipe (I think JerseyGirl posted it a while back and I copied it):

                      1. 2-4 tablespoons of ground pellets.
                      2. Add water or Pedialyte, slowly, until the mixture resembles semi-congealed pudding.
                      3. Wait 3-5 minutes
                      4. Repeat step 2.
                      5. Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute.

                      6. Add more water or Pedialyte, slowly, until mixture has a thick pudding consistency. Should be thin enough to flow well through oral syringe.

NOTE: Add mashed pumpkin or baby food to add pleasing flavor if bunny resists plain pellet mash.
