Hello everyone. I will try to make this quick- I know my questions have a way of getting to be way too long.
Casper, my just-over-a-year mini rex, is constantly molting.
She started her first molt ever I would say around November last year. It started on her face (an albino mini rex looks ridiculous btw with a peach-fuzz pink face), and then moved down her back and then down her sides. It took about 2 months to get to her tummy (regular brushing and plucking), and then just when it seemed like things had grown back to normal, she started molting again on her back and face. So goes the process over. This has taken almost 2 months and she is still molting just on her sides (around her ribs. It is confusing somethings- is she too thin or is there just not very much fur there? Who knows)… So, I am brushing her today and notice a think little spot on her back where the new fur has grown in and give it a bit of a pluck- sure enough, it looks like she is starting to molt again.
She currently has 3 noticeable molt areas happening on her. I honestly don’t think she has stopped molting since November.
She has had two bouts of GI stasis, no doubt the continued hair she is swallowing- we seem to have her evened out now, encouraging her to eat more hay, etc. She is constantly grooming herself- I read somewhere that molting can make them itchy.
I guess my question is, is this normal? I know molts are different for rabbits across the board, but is this something that might be a bigger issue or just is?
A little more background- she is an indoor rabbit. I live in Canada (Calgary, specifically) and for those of you who are unfirmiliar with out climate, we could have rain, snow and suntanning heat all in the same day. We did just have snow and now we are up into late spring temperatures. I know that this may contribute- we keep her window cracked for fresh air and close it if it’s too drafty.
She is also spayed, not sure if that would have an impact on this or not.
Any advice would be appreciated!
