The hormone fairy is here…

So… my 6-month-old Holland Lop, Pamper, who is very very tidy and very litter trained (she always goes inside the litterbox, not one inch more) went bananas yesterday and started peeing on my bed (which she never does), pooping everywhere and making weird noises. She is hyperactive, and runs circles around me while leaving a circular trail of poop and croaking like a frog. After I realised that she’s become a hormone puppet I found it quite scary, actually. It looked like an african ritual or something.

I added 2 and 2 and realised she must’ve reached sexual maturity and I am about to call the vet to schedule an appointment for her spaying. 

What are some things I should consider when I set a date? What questions should I ask the vet to see how much they know about rabbits? Here there are very few bunny-savvy vets and I don’t want to trust my bunny’s health to someone who isn’t prepared!

Oh, and just one more thing… out of curiosity. Is Pamper in any sort of pain? What can I do to make life for her (and me) easier till the procedure day is here?

I forgot to add that a couple days ago I changed her litter from cat litter to pine pellets and they have a strong smell… the first few days she went fine (although at first she was suspicious). But the litter change wouldn’t explain her hiperactivity and running circles around me, right?

The litter change could be a factor with the litter habbits, but she is definitely hormonal. Running in circles around your feet, making “honking” or “oinking” noises, and marking her territory are all signs that her hormones are making her want to get preggers. She is trying to get you to mate with her by circling at you and making those noises. Unspayed females are also especially territorial, which can cause aggression. She’s not in any sort of pain; she is just very sexually frustrated. Females do hump, but it’s usually a dominance thing.

I know just what you’re going thru! My Leia just ended a false pregnancy, and she decided that my daughter was an acceptable mate: honking and circling her and chasing her everywhere! After the false alarm she settled down, but still is kinda hormonal. Her spay is Monday and I can’t wait because now she’s been eyeing me as a possible father to her babies! Lol! It’ll all pass in good time…..

And yes, females do hump!!! Before I got one of my Bridge Buns spayed, she would obsessively hump my husbands slippers. He couldn’t wear them when she was around!

That’s how I found my vet. Lola is a big fan of my left thigh. She seems to be in love with it.
