Well, I guess the lesson here is – no matter HOW much experience a breeder (or, ugh, pet store worker) says they have, NEVER take their word for what sex your bun is! To recap – got my last Flemmie, Jo-Jo, from a very experienced breeder, who said she was a female and she was right. So when I went back to her for a boy (after poor Jo died as a result of spay complications), i believed her when she said Beau and his brother Simba were boys. Well, around 8 weeks old Beau started humping poor Simba. Relentlessly. I figured it was a dominance thing and when Beau started viciously attacking Simba, we found Beau a new home. Well, thank goodness we did – cuz Simba is a girl! Vet came to the house yesterday (for dinner, as he’s my husband ‘s partner) and he gave Simba the once over and is quite certain he’s a she! I’m grateful we dodged an oops litter, but am now terrified about going thru another spay. Well, I have two or three months to worry about that!

Yeah, even vets can get gender wrong – it’s really tough unless there are actually testicles. Glad you were able to separate them before an oops litter!

Does your vet do a lot of spays? It’s very very rare for a bunny to die of complications with an experienced vet. Typically the cause of death was unrelated to the spay itself, like the bunny had a bad heart, or was unusually sensitive to the anesthesia.

Your apprehension is understandable considering what you went through with Jojo. Did your husband’s partner do a necropsy on her by an chance?

No, Sarita, he didn’t. I couldn’t “put her through” that after watching her suffer so badly.

I would definitely be worried about a spay after what you went through-very understandable. I posted on BB all day while I was waiting for Kahlua to come out of her spay-we’ll be here for you when you go through it!

Just went through spay with my Nermal De Nomnoms, had a tense first 24 hrs but things went well once she started taking water… I have 3 more little girls to go so I know exactly what you are feeling.. I wasn’t overly happy with the staff on duty on Fridays at my vets and will be very concerned when my stress head Blossom goes in for her spay.. I am thinking of taking time off so she can be done midweek.
