Okay so I recently got a 11 week old New Zealand giant rabbit and I keep him in my room while down here on the east coast it’s changing to hot weather and my room rises to about 78-85 throughout the day and night and it scares me because I have read up on rabbit having heat stokes and overheat very quickly. And I know if I’m sitting in my room sweating he must be hot too . Is this tempature safe for him? He always has fresh water and I’m not home half the day to give him anything to cool him down. Should I worry if will he be fine?

Yes you already have a good mentality that if your hot hes most likely sweltering.

A rule of thumb I use is:

          – If im Freezing, my bunny is probably cold (45-55 Degrees)
          – If im Cold, My bunny is probably comfortable (55-65 Degrees) [like having the AC on for us humans]
          – If im content, my bunny is probably a bit warm (65-75 Degrees) [average day here in CA]
          – If im hot, my bunny is probably sweltering (78-85 Degrees) [I NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN]

There are things you can do to mitigate this and freeze 2 liter bottles with water and have them around, I also use Chattonoga large black (tougher) medicine freeze packs and place them in a pillow case and exchange them every 30 minutes and he will lay on them.

Here is the page with cooling tips: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/tabid/53/CategoryID/23/PID/940/Default.aspx

I assume that your room doesn’t have air conditioning. Could you set up a fan? You would have to protect the cord if your bunny is out loose in the room. Heat can be very dangerous for rabbits and you will have to make sure that he isn’t overheating, especially since you are away a good part of the day, and wouldn’t be there to take action and get him to a vet if you saw that he was suffering from heat stroke.

Also with the fan if its a cage you can cool wet A towel and place it over the fan for temporary cooling for 15-20 min
