My precious little bun, Koko, has gone to the vet for his surgery on teeth trimming and possible extraction. Been looking up if any other bun parents have gone through this procedure. I am really worry about him, especially because he is getting anesthesia. I was lucky to find a vet near me on the House Rabbit Society website, but I ended up lurking on yelp and read some reviews. I came across of someone who’s rabbit was getting the same procedure and passing away.. I am very nervous, and waiting to get a called on the vet for everything to be okay.

I tried not to imagine the worse, but coming home to see his small home empty broke me into tears, I am so worry about him. If it all goes well, what is expected after the surgery? I don’t expect him to be eating as normal, I do have a salad prepare for him and clean cage for him. I want to make him as comfortable as possible. Me and my bun have so many memories together; he is my very first bun and been together for 7.5 years and 8 next month!

I hope your bunny has made out well.

I’ve no experience with extractions but my boy, Bindi, has to get his molars trimmed every 5 months or so.

Your boy will probably have a sore mouth for a few days. You should ask the vet to send you home pain meds. My vet will sometimes put Bindi on a short course of antibiotics as a precaution if there was a lot of work done in his mouth. Bindi is usually fine, but some bunnies are not willing to eat on their own. You may have to force feed him if he is unwilling. If you can get Critical Care use that, if not you can syringe feed some pellets mushed with water.

I have nothing to add to what LPT has said. I have a bun who’s had work done on his teeth twice under full anesthesia, but no extractions just burring. He needed pain meds after both times so it’s important that you ask for that (Metacam).
Sending you lots of good vibes. It’s really scary to have your bun go through surgery.

I do have Metcam and Baytril from his last vet visit from last week due to his eye tearing, because of his dental problems. But when I gave him the medicine he stop eating, so the vet might use an alternative, I am not very sure. I called the vet to see if he was in surgery, but his surgery is at 1pm. I am very anxious and nervous of what my poor bun has to go through. I am expected to get a called back when he is done with surgery, his pick up is at five. i just want to have my Koko back with me, I miss him.

I came here to ask a similar question.

First, I hope your Koko did well with the surgery! My vet is a half hour away so I have to wait for him to be done with his trimmings in the waiting room. I know the anxiety!

My Señor MunchPickles has been getting regular molar trimmings since October. Yesterday I was told he had severe tooth decay with several of his cheek teeth loose and even a couple missing! We now have to go in every 4 weeks instead of every 6.
The vet asked me to do a CT scan to check for deeper infection and discussed extraction. I feel this will be less expensive for me in the long run, but has anyone ever had a rabbit with almost all of their molars removed? How was the lil bunny’s quality of life afterward? Was he able to continue normal diet or did it need to be modified?

Any and all suggestions and help world be so much appreciated. Thank you!!

Update: Koko is now home. He was very timid the first night. Didn’t touch his salad or hay. Vet gave me Critical Care Fine Grind. He’s been having some every 6 hours. Not much drinking and poop is a little off shape, but from other forums the anesthesia does that. Vet says he should be eating his greens normally. Thank you for everyone that responded.

Now he did end up having two molar extractions. Ouch!! Also teeth trim as well. Was told that he only has eleven teeth, which is really bad. I used to go to a vet that I thought was experienced with rabbits, but I was very wrong. My vet thinks his teeth end up falling My poor bun, luckily he has metacam, hopefully not feeling as much pain.

Question, is there any way to make this critical care grind a little more tasteful?
I haven’t really forced him to eat he licks it from the syringe. I’m also scared to accidentally touch his teeth after his surgery. Any tips?
                  Thank you so much.

Critical care can be mixed with baby food – pumpkin or squash is really good, but I’ve done it with banana strawberry before.

I’m glad he’s home and that you now have a good and bunny-savvy vet! We all need a vet we can trust. As Q8 says, CC can be mixed with just about anything yummy. Baby fruit- or veg purée, plain mashed pumpkin, banana etc. It’s good if you can give him his veg wet (freshly rinsed) and let him have a water bowl if he normally has a bottle, it’s easier for a sore bun to drink from a bowl.

I’m glad he made out well. Poor bub…going to the dentist is pretty much the worse thing ever IMO.

                        (((Koko))))

He does seem to be a lot better. I don’t even have to force feed him, not even the first day! His hunger seems to be back just he seems to be still sore. I would try to syringe the critical care and he’ll attack it. If I don’t push the food fast enough he bites the syringe.
Just when he tries to eat like his wet Kale or Lettuce he chews slowly or just take a little bite and stops. I feel like he waits to get his critical care which is every 6 hours, 6.0ml. And seems to still be hungry after the critical care.
He has both water bowl and bottle, but he’s been using his bowl.

Another question, how long does it take an elder bun after his molar extractions and teeth trim to eat normally with pellets and veggies? Or what’s expected for a bun to go back eating on its own ?

He is suppose to start his antibiotic today, but the vet called saying to wait another day for his bowel movement to get better.

Thank you everyone for your kind and caring support and advice. It’s been a great help going through his dental problems. (:
