TEAR DUCT PLUGS HELP!

Luther was having a left eye issue a week and a half ago so I immediately brought him to his regular rabbit certified vet. Upon examination he told me Luther had a tear duct plug. He gave me Metacam For anti-infalmitory, TMS for oral Antibiotics, and antibiotic eye drops. Well today is his 10th day on all of that, because I know its important to take antibiotics for the length its prescribe, but his eye has been fine for a little less than a week. 10 days was the prescription length.

I should add that my Lila girl had watery eyes the same way in BOTH eyes a few days later. They weren’t red or puffy just leaky, so I felt I should monitor it for 24 hours. This went away on its own so now I feel terrible for giving all those drugs to my boy if it was unnecessary. These two are a bonded pair so I’m almost sure that its wasn’t a plug.

Which brings me to my reason posting here. There is absolutely no sign of leakage coming from either Luther no Lila but my vet office keeps insisting I drop them off so he can examine if its gone. After telling them I wanted to be there to make sure he doesn’t do surgery on him if he doesn’t need it. Then the vet tech told me that they have to give him anesthesia to check if there is a blockage. I don’t feel comfortable with that, I don’t think it necessary with how normal he looks. The vet wants me to keep my Luther on all that stuff longer because the “exam” can’t be done for 4 more days! That 14 DAYS total. That doesn’t seem good to me.

If you can lend any feed back or information. I would really appreciate it, My bunnies are my children, just want another opinion.

I agree with the vet and I don’t see any harm in continuing the drops for 4 more days either…what do you mean by surgery? You don’t do surgery for a blocked tear duct….

Surgery is not performed for a blocked tear duct to unlock it, but it could be needed if the cause of the blocked tear duct is due to an overgrown (or rather pushed-up) tooth-root. Have the vet said anything about your bunny’s teeth?

Have you explained to the vet about Lila having the same symptoms?

I don’t know enough about tear-duct problems to say if your vet is right or not. I tend to go with what my vet says, but they are very good at explaining procedures. Maybe you should ask them to explain to you about their suspicions (if any), a good vet should be able to tell you why your pet gets the treatment it gets.

If it makes you feel safer you could get your bunny a probiotic to help his gut flora cope with the abs. There are several brands like Benebac and Fibreplex, available depending on where you live. I think keeping him on the meds for four more days would be ok, since your vet told you to.

The vet told me about his teeth being perfect and not the problem.

I guess its called a flush but they kept calling it a procedure.

I told them about Lila and they wanted to put her under to check her too.

I consulted with a bunny rescue person who has lots of bunnies with disabilities and such. They told me that they thought it was fine to take him off and go with my gut about it. I didn’t see the need for the flush and thought it best to watch and see if things persist.

Both bunnies are completely tear free.

You could always go back to the vet if the problem returns. I personally think it’s best to avoid having animals put under unless it’s absolutely necessary, since there’s always a risk (for people too).

Keep an eye on them (I know you will, of course), go back to vet if it comes back, if it doesn’t come back – YAY!

I think if the duct needed flushing it would still be running. I agree with you. I would just keep an eye on it and make an apt. with the vet if necessary.

Thank you guys! My gut feeling was to not put them under unnecessary stress! I’ll keep an eye as well! As for now, they are back to my perfect beautiful pair<3
