  I suspect my female has gas. She’s almost 8 months. I was cuddling her after work and heard some gurgling in her belly. Is any amount of gurgling normal in rabbits? Anyway, I know that it’s safe to give simethicone with suspicion, so I gave her .6 ML. She is eating fine and pooping and does not seem lethargic. She was very excited about her salad still. I also gave her a tummy massage on either side of the spine. My question is, if she becomes discomforted, I have some left over meticam from her spay about a month and 1 week ago, is that ok to give her? I would only give it if she seems to be in obvious discomfort with decreased appetite.

  Yes, some gurgling is normal for bunnies. If she is eating, pooping and doesn’t seem uncomfortable, I honestly wouldn’t worry about it. If it is gas, that is pretty painful for bunnies, so most bunnies are at least a little “off”.

  Oh ok!! I thought I remembered reading that any gurgling is not normal and can indicate gas in bunnies. So just to make sure my other information is correct, simethicone is safe to give even if you just suspect gas right?

  Some gurgling will happen now and then. I wouldn’t consider that a symptom unless there are other symptoms that would suggest gas (e.g. refusing food and treats, shifting uncomfortably, pushing stomach to the floor, generally acting off, etc.). Yes, Simethicone is safe to give. Even if you just suspect gas. I mean, that’s all anyone really does… suspect. Bunny cannot tell you that his/her tummy hurts. But bunny owners can often tell when something isn’t right and it doesn’t hurt to give simethicone “just in case”.

  Oh ok. She seemed to be acting normal and was eating and pooping, but I just had never heard her tum gurgling like that!

  Luna’s tummy gives a gurgle now and then. Tummy noises can be gas, but tummy noises can also be just tummy noises . You did exactly the right thing by giving her some simethicone, watching her eating/pooping, and following up with a tummy massage just in case.

  I’ve had quite a few instances where one or both buns have had really loud gurgling tummies. No other signs of pain or discomfort though so I just encouraged them to run around by getting them to run to me for treats and usually within 30-45 mins, it’s all sorted
