Sudden stasis please help

I noticed my bunny stopped eating, was being lethargic. I went to emergency vet and they assumed stasis. She gave him a shot of buprenorphine as well as metacloprimide and fluids. He isn’t really moving or eating so I fed him critical care… he spit most of it up. Please someone help me… he won’t eat anything I offer him.

When would you say he last ate? The vet indicated it would be okay to syringe feed? There is no blockages or anything?

Did they check his temperature? When any of my rabbits go off food, I like to keep them on my lap to give them warmth. I also usually offer grass, rose leaves and petals and willow, if I have it. They seem to want to eat those things. Raspberry leaves are good if you can find them. You might have some success with herbs also. Can you get hold of some dill? Or carrot tops?

When you syringe feed Critical Care to a rabbit, most of it will get on the bunny and you. That’s ok as long as some of it goes into the bunny. It’s actually a good sign if a bun fights being fed, because it means he has fighting spirit in him. You can mix the CC with something sweet like mashed banana or baby fruit purée, a little bit of sugar can help perk a bun up plus it makes the CC more appetizing.

Did you see if he tried to clean himself after being fed? It’s good if he did.

Have you seen any poop?

Buprenorphin is an opioid painkiller and can make a bun drowsy. It is important that he moves around a bit though, to get the gut going.

He did not spit it up, rabbit can’t puke or spit up things. You need to put the syringe further down his throat! Don’t choke him but maybe look up for some help. You aren’t alone, I was terrified when my female has stasis and I freaked! She wouldnt let me force feed (she is 9 pounds and has a powerful kick and bite, even the vet said they totally get it). You got antibiotics im guessing and appetite meds ( I dont know much about meds, but the meds i got if they are the same is in my first aid kit forum) ? Also did they give your bun liquids (under the skin)?? He wil be okay. He is sick. You can massage his stomach to help him and offer his favorite fruits/veggies/treats. Also to encourage water drinking, mix some apple juice (the natural kind, no sugar. and water (if you need more apple juice then water fine). Force feed that critical every so often, you can also offered 100% canned pumpkin. Even organic fruit/veg baby food. Since he is sick all of these things are okay to encourage eating. I was thrilled if my rabbit ate her favorite treat (which isnt really good for her).

 Stay calm and if you can’t get the food down his throat by tomorrow morning. Go back to the vet!!!!

He’s moving, I just kept trying to feed him, he sniffs hay but doesn’t want it yet. I got him to hop around a bit but then he freaked out when he was getting into his condo and started jumping everywhere and slipping, could he have hurt himself?

Ugh I hate this, trying to keep it together. I think I have to call out of work tomorrow, but I can’t call for a few more hours.

Last known instance he ate was about 5:30 pm and we took him in at 11 pm.

It was an emergency vet… so they said no blockages but didn’t X-ray.

If there’s no blockage, you should feed him.

As Starla says, a bunny can’t spit up, it can only spit out what’s in it’s mouth. They will do that, and it’s normal, but something must go into the bunny. If you put the syringe further into his mouth you must take extremely good care he swallows each and every little bit of food before you give more. This is so he doesn’t breathe in any of the food.

He could’ve hurt himself jumping around, but this will have to be a secondary concern unless he’s showing signs of grave injury, like having broken something. Try to burrito him in a towel for feeding. The burrito is not only practical for you, it also helps calm a rabbit, like a thundershirt does for dogs.

He seems feisty, and that’s great. Keep up the feeding a few hours apart. make sure he’s kept warm, poorly buns can get cold. If you sit him in your lap like Jersey suggests, he’ll get warmth from your body without risk of over-heating. I’d also try fragrant herbs, Herbs are often enticing enough for a poorly bun to want to try a little bit of.

Honestly with my bun i was freaked the f***out i get it. I had the emergency vet come and inject liquids. But if your rabbit lets you force feed then you are most likely okay!! I also was recommend pedialyte not flavored to keep hydrated!! Don’t worry super hard and loose sleep. It doesnt seem it has been close or near 24 hours. If you can take our advice you may not have to visit the vet again. But if you are super worried, you can go to vet and et under the skin liquids from the vet. G.I. Stasis spent a good penny out of my own pocket, first i got an appt. plus bought 2 oral meds ($$), plus x-ray foudn out my baby has probably one HUGE kidney ($$). She made it impossible to give it to her but i tried and freaked out and called the emergency vet to meet us ($$). Then we showed the vet the next day that she is impossible to force feed (I had a huge bruise and she tore out her own hair) and they gave me needles and a vial of one medication. Also got a bag of liquids. Then she got hair loss (i forget what is called, i have a forum about it but im not on the forum now) which costed another vet visit plus shaving plus cleaning. I’m telling you this b/c there are worse cases where you cant even put the syringe in their mouth. It seems you’re rabbit is letting you treat him. nlike my stubborn bun. Please take a deep breath, i know you’re worried I was and would be too. But youre rabbit seems to responding good to the treatment and it suck to see him not eating as much but if he can take his meds and critical care then your bun is ok!! You seem like a great bun parent!!

Also, if calling off work helps you. Do it!! He is your child!! I left my college classes early when my bun had GI Stasis because it was all I could think about. He wont hurt himself, he is trying to move which is good!! Also X-Rays are not needed, many rescues agree when it comes to GI Stasis. I got an x-ray b/c they felt a lump (which was her one kidney). Massage his tummy if you can and keep up the good work!!
