Hi again
Don’t be fooled by my smile, inside I’m slowly going insane.
So my 11 week old mini lop fluffykins (or Holland lop if you’re in USA) is quite – or will be – quite good at litter training. He does only go in a couple of corners (on the same edge) of his condo when he’s in it, only at night. During the day he has an xpen set up in the living room and he uses his litter box in there nicely (for pees; for poops… It’s everywhere but I expect this and don’t mind it).
Now I know litter training will only happen seriously after neutering but the problem isn’t really litter training. Sort of but not.
The problem is, I can only put his condo in ONE space, literally one space only and because it’s against a wall and the doors are only on one side, it can only be facing one way. So it’s two levels and there’s a long wooden stairs type thing that hooks only in ONE area, the small opening to the second level.
The problem is – fluffykins has chosen that bottom corner at the base of the stairs to use as his potty. This is the right hand side of his condo. I don’t have space to hang his hay rack on the right hand side of his condo. HOWEVER (after two weeks of uncussessfully trying to make his litter place the left hand side of the condo) I have realised he doesn’t do a single wee or poop when he is eating his hay! Not a single one in that whole time. So he’s not your normal bunny that likes to munch and poop. He likes to keep it very separate!
So this morning I gave up and placed the litter tray on the right hand side he chose as a toilet for himself (and left the hay rack on the other side with a fleece blanket to snuggle on). Only the issue is now, the wooden stairs have ended up sitting right in the middle of the tray!!
They already get wee splatters from when he kept going in that corner anyway but now I’ve “given in” and placed the actual (big) litter tray there… It’s like I’m accepting the stairs are part of the toilet – and I don’t want to accept this!
He doesn’t actually wee or poop on the stairs but because it’s in the area it always ends up dirty (I clean it throughtly with vinegar / water mix). It’s only the very bottom bit of it getting dirty anyway. So my question is, other then cutting the stairs short and having it end before it sits in the litter tray (and maybe using a box or something as a last step down) what can I do?!
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that side will have to be his potty side but is there a covering or something I could use on the stairs to keep them cleaner and make it easier to clean the expected remnants of wee and poop? Like a bag or something I could wrap around the bottom part then put it sitting in the middle of the litter box so when it comes to cleaning time I just unwrap it? I obviously need something like a bag but not a bag because he’ll chew through it
Getting a narrower litter tray so the steps don’t have to sit in it isn’t an option, there just isn’t enough space left on that side after the stairs touch the bottom.
Thank you for any ideas with this!
Ps sorry I can’t attach pics from my phone and I can only use my phone. It keeps saying all my files are too big.
