Two Flemish girls. Although they are free to run 24/7 in the house, they stay pretty much in their pen, even though the pen door is always open. They do move about the house sometimes. Just this morning one was laying behind the dining room drape and I could hear her making a cooo-ing sound as she was licking her fur. When rabbits are not afraid of you and bond to you, they become vocal! If you pet them, actually massaging the back of their necks and shoulders, they make a cat like purring equivalent…however for a bunny they chatter their teeth and make deep breathing sounds. You have to hold your ear up to their mouth to hear this. Like I mentioned earlier they can make a coooing sound also if they are happy.
The Scream. Bunnies can make a scream sound that sounds just like a human baby in distress. My previous rabbit, Bunny, had an oat barb caught on her dewlap. ( The dewlap is a female bunny furry fat deposit underneath the neck, its to provide nourishment for baby bunnies.) When I tried to remove the barb from Bunny’s throat dewlap, she really struggled. She absolutely positively did not want me to touch her throat or her dewlap. I tried several times. Finally on one attempt she screamed. IT WAS LIKE A HUMAN BABY SCREAM!
Anyhow, the barb was really just hanging very loose at this time. I gave it a swish with my hand and it was gone. Bunny was 100% normal after this experience.
Post Take Away: When stressed, rabbits will make a loud screaming sound when they are frightened.
