Hello there. I am very happy to have found this website since I have learnt so many things from all of you. I would like your advice according a problem that came up to my beloved bunny. My baby went to the vet and was found to have rhinitis. Above her nose there are two tiny light yellow spots but everything else is completely fine. Her ears are clean and she had no other symptom, no sneezing or anything suspicious. The vet gave her an injection and also an antibiotic which has a pink color. From the second dosage of the antibiotic, 2 hours after the given medicine she was very sad, lethargic and she didn’t want to move or eat anything. Also her stomach was extremely hard and she was clearly in a lot of pain. I gave her a massage and tried several hours to help her and now she seems much much better and she ate her pellets her veggies and she looks calm. Do you believe I should stop giving her the drug? She has an extremely sensitive stomach since she was a baby. I would love to hear your advice.

It is possible that the antibiotic isn’t sitting well with your rabbit. I would call the vet to update them on your observations. Your vet may recommend skipping the next dose and coming in again.

If your rabbit has a sensitive stomach, it may be worth asking your vet to do the treatment through shots, rather than an oral medication. I’ve heard that helps.

Wick has taken a lot of oral antibiotics, and the only one he could not tolerate (stomach pain after a dose; gurgly stomach) was flagyl, which is a safe medication, but didn’t sit well with Wick. I called the vet and they advised to skip the next dose, see if the gastric distress still occurs, and come in for a visit. At the visit, we decided to go to just Flocillin shots to treat Wick’s tooth infection at the time, instead of the oral flagyl.

I’m unsure if rhinitis is the same, a subset, or an umbrella term which includes upper respiratory infections, but Wick had a URI when I got him. I can’t picture yellow spots or what they’d have to do with a nasal condition, but if your vet is knowledgeable, it’s good you have a diagnosis! From my experiences with Wick, I know there are many types of antibiotics and some have different side effects on different bunnies, so I think discussing with your vet your rabbit’s reaction is a good first step to revising treatment.

Wishing you and your rabbit the best!
