        Hi everybody,

Joey has recently been pooping softer, more mushy poops. They aren’t runny, but they are softer than his regular ones. They don’t come out in clusters (I assumed they would be missed cecotropes, but doesn’t look like it), they’re darker, softer, and wetter. They don’t smell like anything either. I’ve been told to give him more pellets for the winter to stay warm, but maybe that’s the problem? He’s acting normal, and still eats his hay.

        Any ideas?

Too many carbs (from pellets) can def cause stomach upset. Did your vet tell you to give him more pellets? Is he housed outdoors?

As LPT says, the change in diet is the likely culprit. I’d suggest you cut back on the pellets again, and then re-start to up his daily ration very slowly, so the tummy gets a chance to get used to the more nutritious food. The gut microbiota is sensitive in rabbits and not much is needed to disrupt it – thus all changes to a bun’s diet should be made very slowly. Extra pellets wouldn’t be needed unless he lives outside during winter though.
