Squinty Eye Discharge

Always on a Saturday and right after my normal vets are closed

The title is fairly self-explanatory. Apollo has a squinty eye with discharge. His other eye is fine. He’s acting pretty normal, hungry, hopping around, lounging with Luna. The only difference was yesterday he slept somewhere he normally doesn’t in a different position to normal. I thought it was odd but he was otherwise fine, I should have given him the once over.

I’m thinking I might wash it with a saline solution today to see if it helps, then tomorrow might have to find a suitable after hours vet to see him if it’s worsening or not improving. For a weepy eye I might just hold off till Monday but we’re supposed to be camping then, although I could try to get in first thing to see them since they open at 7 before we leave.

My work friend who is pet sitting to feed and water etc has had a rabbit, but she may not notice other subtle changes if he worsens (aside from the obvious not eating).

I’m possibly overreacting for a weepy eye and maybe he just got some hay dust in it, but I would worry less if it was a week day or we weren’t going away.

Have some worried bunny mum photos of his eyes. It’s tough to compare because they’re in different light, but he didn’t want to play the cooperation game.

Any other suggestions besides rinsing with saline?

Aw poor boy.

A Saline wash sounds like a good idea. You could also try a warm compress. So just a wash cloth soaked in warm water, squeeze out then hold against the eye. They usually enjoy this. It can bring some relief but also *sometimes* unclog tear ducts if they are blocked up.You could do the same thing using a chamomile tea bag, if you have one handy.

Apollo was not a fan of the warm compress He, like Bandit used to, knows just the spot in the condo to get away from me. The stairs, super tricky to get to him there.

Before I put the compress on it already looked a little bit better since I rinsed it earlier, turns out I didn’t have saline solution (I’m sure I do but can’t think where it’s gone) but I did have some Celluvisc (carmellose sodium) which I read was safe to use so I used one of the vials of that because I figured it was better than nothing.

Yeah, that would help lubricate the eye I think. Spend the other day looking at the zillion different eye drops and carmellose was in quite a lot of them. Using some for Podge at the moment which have that and glycerin in them.
Good to hear it’s improved some.

It’s funny that, standing around in a chemist reading every packet, to have someone come up and ask if they can help. “Yes, but only if you know which of these is safe to use on my rabbit”

I hope Podge is doing alright I’m going to give Apollo another one tonight before I go to bed.

ETA: Checking his eye right now, it looks like there’s less discharge, but the iris is very red. I don’t know whether it would have gone that way anyway. His good eye is still the regular pink, but the bad eye is dark pinky/red. My poor little guy.

Hooray! His eye is all better this morning, which means he’s not dying I swear when I first saw it yesterday, my worst case scenario mind went immediately to myxomatosis, lol. I had to tell myself to be sensible because he clearly had no other symptoms. Sick pets are stressful
