I just got my new bun tonight, I’m so happy to have him but he’s already managing to scare me!

He was lying down and I just heard him making a soft “squeaking” sound with each breath. He stopped when I moved to get a better look at him. He’s lying down again right now but he’s not squeaking. What can squeaking mean??

-Could this be a stress thing from being in a new environment with new rabbits not too far away?

-He went from his own room at the shelter to a “small” cage (in comparison). Is he squeaking because he wants out?

-I’m using bedding which I’m not sure if he’s ever had bedding before, Is it possibly just getting in his nose?

-I just read that EC can cause a squeaking when it reaches the throat. Is this true or possible? I just lost a bunny from EC so I’m a little nervous.

I’m not sure if it’s relevant but he was neutered semi-recently.

On a side note, he has very bad sore hocks and is recovering from them, is there much I can do to help? Or any threads discussing sore hocks I can check out?

I’m sorry to hear that you lost a bun  Could the squeaks be hiccups?

Im not entirely sure. My Bombur squeaks when he is scared or upset (I think hes trying to grunt, but he just sounds like a quiet squeaky toy), and my Badger squeaks when he is having trouble breathing (allergies + prone to chest/lung/nasal infections).

What kind of bedding are you using? Not all bedding types are safe.

It’s carefresh bedding, paper-based. It definitely could be something to do with an infection or allergies, when I take him to the vet maybe they’ll be able to tell.

I’ve never heard hiccups before so I’ll have to watch a video of that. If it’s just hiccups that’d be a relief!

Thanks for the suggestion guys, I appreciate the help.

If he does it again, try to get a video so we can have a better idea.

The bedding youre using is fine (unless you find it abnormally dusty?), so I would definitely bring it up with the vet to make sure its not a starting infection. If it is just allergies, a vet will be able to help you figure out what hes allergic to so you can help him avoid it

I’ll do my best to get a good video if I can catch him doing it again. And I hope it’s something simple like an allergy because then I can do something to help lol. Thanks again guys

For sore hocks, I found putting a thick blanket in a cotton pillowcase for him to sit on really helped I was also told by a vet that you can also put sudocrem (or an equivalent) on them.

Okay thanks, I’ll try that. I feel so bad when I see his feet, it looks so painful.
