› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Spring Cleaning! Getting rid of bunny smell?
So I am one of those weird people that loves to clean and I really get into spring cleaning. But I do have a question for all of you! How do you get rid of that “bunny” smell? I can’t describe it, I guess it’s bunny urine that I’m smelling? I smell it in the bunny room, we have laminate wood flooring that they sometimes pee on, and I mop it up as soon as I see it, but I can still smell it occasionally. I normally just use hot water and vinegar and it gets the spots up but doesn’t seem to be getting rid of the smell, and air fresheners just seem to mask the smell (which is even worse really, eww). Any tips for making our bunny room smell more fresh?
You love to clean?? I so wish I was one of those people…but I’m not…far from it!!
Maybe you could try replacing your litter boxes? I find after a while they get so yucky that they do sort of give off a smell even if you clean it a lot. I don’t really do anything special to my rabbit room, I don’t find I get a lot of smell in there. I do the same: clean with vinegar. Air fresheners are not good for rabbits though, not if they are quite close to where you keep your bunnies.
Do they have any fabrics which might need laundering?
Is it possible to open a window or something? Sometimes, in addition to cleaning things out, it’s great to air a room out (bunny room or not) to just create some circulation and freshen things up. Of course, gotta make sure the buns can’t get out the window!
I love cleaning too! haha. I clean their pan out every two or three days because the smell of their urine is pretty strong. is there any fabric or something they could have peed on that you don’t see? I also smelled urine for awhile despite the fact I clean their cage out frequently, then I discovered one of them had peed in their carrier and the smell stayed. You could definitely air out the room, I also invested in an air purifier from target [only 20 something dollars]. helps with the smell AND keeps my allergies at bay =]
Wow. All your ladies that love cleaning need to become my roommates! lol! I so hate cleaning. Doesn’t help that my knee and back have issues, they make it easy to back out of cleaning stuff ![]()
Me too! If I pay your trip will ya’ll come do my Spring Cleaning????
I just did a pretty major clean-up in “Frankie’s” bedroom (don’t tell him it’s actualy mine… to him I just sleep on top of his burrow). It was geting to look like a total barnyard. I took a before and after… possibly just to motivate myself/.

Don’t overlook the walls. Depending on what they consist of (paint/wallpaper) you might want to wipe them down with a bucket of hot water. My bunny room walls get fur “stuck” there (from static?) There’s also a possibility there has been a bit of urine spraying, even spay/neutered buns can spray. Sometimes that can blend in and you don’t notice it and it dries. If you have drapes hanging, clean those as well.
I have found smeared poo on the wall, not sure how it got up so high, but…. I have found to keep the smell down in my room is to clean the litter boxes every day, not just scooping them but cleaning them with vinegar and water.

I have found that too. When Eddie was alive so it had to be him. There’s a dark blob on my ceiling that might be poop. I can’t tell. Seriously. HOW DO THEY DO THAT? LOL Apparently it’s projectile poop. ha

I note in that pic he has placed a stray piece of hay just outside his condo. The territory marking of a bun too refined to use poops?
Rachel, that’s inspirational! Do I detect some actual rabbit APPROVAL there?!
@Beth: Could any of the pee have gotten thru the flooring and soaked into the back? I suppose you could douse the spots with a enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle.
Definately go on a hunt for spots they could have marked that you haven’t discovered yet. Joy ![]()
I discovered the spot. The entertainment center that I just *KNEW* they couldn’t fit under? Yeah, they can fit under it. *sigh*
Also apparently SOMEONE sprayed the baseboards. So lots of cleaning. ARRRGH. Lol it’s amazing the places they manage to mark.
Yes, there was approval! He’s even started flopping, which I haven’t seen him really do in like a year or so!
grumpybun – because Frankie is such a proper gentlebun, hahaha. I kept glaring at that piece of hay. He tends to hop out of his box excitedly with hay in his mouth, so he drops some like that. He does flying poops sometimes too when he’s excited that someone is walking by. Hops out of the box toward said person while still pooping and they go rolling off behind him mid-air.
I’ve recently discovered that sprinkling baking soda around gets the “bunny smell” (small urine spots, old lettuce juice from salads, hay dust smell, etc.) out of the carpet really well. For big, fresh urine spots, I’ve found that pure vinegar does great for getting out the smell and most of the yellow color.
What kind of litter do you use?
I’ve noticed that the smell will stay at bay for a couple of days if I keep Huckleberry’s hay and litter separated. Urine soaked hay is the worst smell!!!
I personally use wood stove pellets as litter and it is very good at keeping it from having a smell (but there also isn’t a woody odor). The only time you actually smell the urine is when you’re changing the littler box and expose wet parts.
