Spiders??

Ok so the bug problem in my house is just ridiculous. Like seriously. I’m worried about spiders this time, I’ve tried to look it up but can never find anything. Anyways, I have now found 2 spiders in my buns hutch. One being a wolf spider, the other a small harmless one. Are Wolf Spiders dangerous to buns? I don’t want her to get bit or anything. I’ve read that they help them but I’m not so sure if that’s true when they are bigger than a quarter. I also have a phobia of spiders so this is not fun for me. Anyways, if there anything to get rid of all these pests? Also please tell me if they will harm her! I’ve only seen one other Wolf Spider, and it was no where near her hutch. Really hope you guys know if these demons are harmful to her!

What country are you in? Wolf spiders is a whole family of spiders varying in size and, of course, in venomous potential. A “normal” wolf spider can bite a human and cause local inflammation, so I’m assuming it’s quite capable of biting a bunny. It has a neurotoxin but it’s not very strong. It seems that it’s only the types in Australia that can actually kill a small vertebrate (f ex a toad).

I don’t know how to keep spiders away exept perhaps with mosquito netting. I hope someone else here knows, f ex our Aussie members. They ought to know a good deal about protection against spiders. I’ll ask our Aussie leader Jerseygirl for you.

I know spiders don’t like me whacking them one, but anyway spiders also don’t like lemon juice, so if you put some lemon juice on a cloth and wipe down walls and cabinets and your floor they hate it because they taste things through their feet same as those extra large eight legged things, they hate lemon, I’m no expert on spiders, I know I don’t like them no matter what size or colour or a missing leg, its hot weather now so spiders are out in the sun, there is a product called Raid that kills spiders, it blocks the pores, they breath through their skin, but the spray is harmful to bunnies and not advisable to use it near bunny, you could check for gaps in your floors and walls and keep windows closed so they don’t sneak in, or get a screen over your windows and doors, shake all bedding clothes and check your shoes making sure none have sneaked in there to make a hiding place, you could put hay in a big plastic bin with a lid, because spiders like hay because its nice and warm, you could be extra nasty with spiders and get some mouse glue strips and put double sided sticky tape on the back of these sticky strips and stick them to the sides of windows and top of table and chair legs, not near bunny because it won’t be fun trying to get bunny off the glue strip, I have some strips in my kitchen draw and where it says ‘Mouse glue’ I crossed out Mouse and wrote ‘SPIDER’ I don’t have many spiders in my home I’m in the UK, but October is fun, they climb on these strips and the fun begins, but its disposing the strips I don’t like.

Thank you for all of the replies on how to get rid of these guys. Luckily I’m no where near Australia so I don’t think they can really harm her, other than a bite. I will definitely try some things to get rid of them, I don’t even want any chances of a Wolf Spider touching her haha

If you grab a small dustpan brush and brush down the walls and ceilings every day, say when you clean her litter tray, this really helps. If they can’t build a Web because it gets destroyed they won’t hang around.

Spiders are not that harmful unless it is a hobo spider. Some spiders can inject venom. My neighbours daughter was bitten by the hobo spider and it took several weeks to heal the wound. Later she took help of Pest Control Larchmont NY professionals to get her house spider free.

michael, well everyone, I don’t want to scare anyone, I’m in the Britain, I have been bitten a few times by spiders, twice I ended up in the hospital, all spiders bite, its not just the Hobo spider, sometimes it can be an allergy to the venom, in no way am I trying to scare anyone, all I can say is ‘If in doubt, get it thrown out.’

All spiders have venom. Not all spiders are dangerous to humans. In fact, most aren’t. If they bite, it’s just itchy or a raised bump. But you’re right CA, some people can have an allergic reaction. I suppose that could be true for bunnies as well.

On a fun side note, harvestmen (aka “daddy long legs”) do not have venom and do not bite. That is an urban legend.

Spiders are a tricky one. Brambino’s suggestion is however a good one. Spiders often don’t like to be disturbed, so if you brush all around the walls and roof of the hutch inside and outside every day you will probably get rid of the spider That or you can kill it. I doubt that a wolf spider would kill a rabbit, but their bite can result in quite a bit of pain and swelling, which depending on where they bite can potentially be the main danger. I’ve been bitten by a huntsman spider (while sleeping) and the pain and swelling from that was quite bad.

Perhaps you could also try sticky insect paper on the outside of the hutch to catch it.

All these replies are scaring me and now I’m super determined to get these guys away. I’ve been cleaning out her hutch and vaccuming around it alot and I haven’t really seen any more. There’s a cricket in there now, I just love my life. ?
