Hi all, does anyone have some experiences with their rabbit not eating after getting spayed? Our vet kept our girl, Olive, overnight just to ensure that she was back on her feet and eating, but now they are telling me she still has not eaten or pooped (she did pee) since surgery and will most likely be staying another night. To say the least our whole family is very concerned. I feel awful that she is away from us, her safe sense of environment and her mate during this time.
        Anybody have a similar experience?
I will hear both the good and the bad because I know the worst could be reality, but we are praying for a good outcome.

        Thanks.

When my boys went for their neuter, Bombur woke up first and was eating first (they kept them for 36 hours). A day later when we brought him home the only thing he would eat was greens, and that was very sparingly. He wasn’t eating hay or pellets, and his poop was very small. He had an infection starting, which was causing some stasis. They gave him CC, motility drugs, and an antibiotic and he was good as new within a few days. Just be patient. It’s good that the vet has her longer, which means they will catch anything that might be wrong almost immediately. You can ask your vet to visit her for a little bit. If my boys had to stay longer they already told me I could.

Luna had to stay longer after her spay, as she wasn’t eating properly after the first night We picked her up in the evening, so about 30 hours after the spay, by which point she was eating just about enough by herself.

I’m sure Olive will be fine, spays are harder than neuters, but the situation you’re in isn’t unusual, and it sounds like your vet knows what they’re doing!

Perhaps you could ask to take in a blanket from home, so she has something that smells familiar?

It is reassuring to hear that her being at the vets is a good thing. I’ve always given the post-op care to all my animals as well as many injured wildlife so it feels very strange in this situation not to be hands-on caring for her issues. I feel left out of the loop and it’s probably just making me feel more anxious for her.
We sent her stuffed animal she and her mate snuggle and groom, as well as her blankets so that she would have familiar smells around her. Unfortunately the vet is a two hour trip so running over just to visit isn’t much of an option ?
