        Hello!
So for those who aren’t as familiar with my previous posts, my hubby surprised me on Valentines day for two young bunnies. And for an extra SURPRISE, ones a boy and ones a girl!! At least that what the pet store told him – his “boys” haven’t dropped yet.
He is about 3 months now and she is about 4 months now. – They are separated currently with separate outside play time

So now we are looking at the Neuter and the Spay (they will be seeing the vet for fully checkups before hand) and I have two questions.

From what I have read on here for a boys Neuter they say 3 months or older and for the girls spay the vet told me 4 months or older, but I read on here 6 months or older.

Question 1) what age is best for the Spay and for the Neuter?

Question 2) I have been saving the last of my vacation days (I have 4 days left, but could take a sick day if I need to make it a whole week off with weekends on either end) to take care of them.
For this reason I was thinking of have both bunnies done at the same time – or a day a part – so that I am home to watch over both of them and feed them Critical if needed – otherwise I am out of the house for 10 hours a day.

        Here is my thinking:
Pros for both at the same time – Don’t have to go through it all 3 months later, They are both recovering together and their hormones will balance around the same time (approx). I have been pr-bonding lightly with switching litter and cages just to keep them used to each others smells and there is no aggression and not much marking – so I could start bonding them 2 months after (depending on how they are acting) as opposed to 5 or 6 months after the boy is done while we wait for the girl to be done and to balance out.

Cons – which hadn’t occurred to me, I saw someone else comment that dealing with two recovering rabbits at the same time may be stressful. And then I also wouldn’t have as much time home with each of them as I would have to split my vacation days.

I have never had to go through a rabbit recovery from a neuter / spay before so I’m stressing a bit (especially over the spay)
So what are your thoughts on these two questions? Thanks

Personally I would have them done at the same time, given your circumstances. I had mine done a weekish apart but I have the ‘luxury’ of not working so being with them for their recovery wasn’t an issue. Your boy will most likely bounce back within a day or so anyway so you’ll only have the stress of making sure your female is okay

Oh in terms of age, both of mine were 4 months. Some vets do recommend waiting til the female is 6 months but mine was happy to do it at 4 months. Boys can be neutered as soon as their testicles drop.

              Thanks Sarah!
Is it noticeable when their testies drop? I had a boy hamster and oh BOY you could tell he was a boy with out even picking him up lol.
From what I see on Google you can see them looking pink in colour and sticking out a bit through the fur.

I mean the store could have been wrong as he was 8 weeks when we got him…. but when I put a stuffed bunny in with him (to try and help with pre-bonding with their scents on things) and oh boy, he circled it once while sniffing at it and went to instant humping  hahahah then then licked and groomed it when he was done, so at least he was a gentleman LOL

I would agree, both at the same time sounds like it makes sense for you. Honestly, none of my bunnies have needed ‘intensive’ care from me after their ops. My vet keeps them overnight the first night, then sends them back in pretty good condition, so other than giving them their meds, and checking its healing okay, I haven’t had to do much. Fingers crossed yours go well too!

My vet says 5 months for a spay, but if your vet is happy with 4 months, then it should be fine.

It can be obvious when their balls drop – they’re not furry, so there’s pretty obvious pink bits! But, bunnies can suck them in if they want to, so you don’t always see it. I didn’t ever see Nimbus’s, until the vet got them out haha.

My boys were both 4 months when they were neutered. Bombur had dropped at 7 weeks and Asriel around 10 weeks. When your boy is out, you can check by holding a treat above his head and having him periscope. You should be able to get a good look that way. Then again, if your boy doesn’t mind having his leg lifted, you can do it that way. Humping isn’t always a male thing. Females can hump too, so bear that in mind. Honestly, at this point it could be a toss up. A coworker of mine knew someone who’s male didn’t drop until 6 months old, and they thought they had a female. I also know Wick’s dropped at 8 months, I think?

haha ok, he pariscopes all the time and I don’t see anything and I’m not a fan of picking him up and flipping him over.

I had a friend say that even the vet said he had a girl – wasnt’ until they went to do the spay that they found out the needed to do a neuter. And don’t worry, I asked what vet he used so that I don’t go to that one hahaha.

Sirius & Luna (Your name actually got me reading the books again lol) – My vet wont be keeping them over night – I wish they were, as at about $300 for him and $400 for her that would be nice lol.
But I hope it goes as smoothly as yours did!

I find I’m extra paranoid as its only been a month since we had to put our senior down – she was already 4.5 years old when we got her so didn’t risk spaying her at that point.

You should have seen my moms face when she asked what I wanted for my Birthday at the end of this month… Ummmm a Neuter or a Spay? Your Choice! lol

That’s odd. My boys were $350 each and were kept overnight with everything included. It seems such a high price to not have that included.

I’m also glad to see another HP fan on the forum Never enough Potterheads to gush about the books to.

Ya! I’m not sure if its because I am in Canada and live more out by the country (you would think it would be cheaper away from the city?!) but there are not that many Bunny-Savy vets around here. They are considered “Exotics” so maybe the feel they can charge more that way…. I can get a cat spayed for half that price!

Or they say they are experienced with Rabbits and you get in with them, and yes they know some stuff, but I know more than them from just being on this forum. I finally found one when our sinor was sick that I felt was compitent to keep going too – she only a 30min drive away and the others are over an hour!

AND ALL THE HARRY POTTER!! LOL I wanted to name our boy “Harry Hopper” but my husband squashed that idea real quick haha

I never saw Peanut’s testicles but the vet had a quick look on the day to make sure, and he must have seen them as he neutered him without any issues

haha Harry Hopper is a brilliant name!

Sadly I don’t have Sirius anymore, so the theme has slipped a bit. I now have Luna, Atlas and Nimbus… I’m counting Nimbus as Harry Potter themed because of the broomstick though.
