Hello-Here in NJ. It has been extremely cold. The best few days area supposed to be in the single digits, and on monday there will be a below zero wind chill. My outdoor rabbit winnie has a two story hutch-i’m worried about her getting two cold, even though this will be her 4th winter. I have her cage protected from wind by a tarp on two sides, and at night a heavy comforter covers her whole cage with many spaces for air. I can’t find any straw to insulate, and by the time i order a heating pad it won’t come in in time. While we do have a place indoors for her, it is hard to move her and i don’t want her to become sick from different temperatures . In her large playpen, she has been running around, and doesn’t look too cold, but night may be an issue. I’ve given her extra food, bedding, and i am thinking of putting in some large fleece scraps for her to bury in. Her water has socks on it, and i replace it often. Is there anything else i can do for these next 3 days??!(I apologize for any typos)
        -Liv&Winnie

I’m in Jersey and had the same worries, although mine are indoors. I did a lot of reading up on the topic and some sites recommend moving them to a shed or garage or someplace that they can be out of the drafts. Also, they reccommended having a very insulated closed off area for them to sleep and get away from the cold in. In regards to the heating pad, you can buy one at any drug store or Wal-Mart etc. I would just be worried about them chewing the wire?? Maybe try to cover it or hide It? Not a lot but hope it helps and good luck!

Do you have a large enclosed box you could fill with her bedding box, rags and hay for burrowing? It might help for when she sits still. Just cut a flap in it that is just big enough for her to fit and can swing up and down from the top edge. Watch and be sure she will use it though, rather than sitting outside more.

As long as she stays dry and it doesn’t get in the negatives or the water freeze up, your rabbit should be okay. Wind and water getting to her is the main issue, but rabbits love the cold and as long as she can stay dry and out of the wind, she should be doing just fine. You can give them bedding or a box/burrow to sit in and she’ll be even warmer in there when she’s not enjoying the nice rabbit-preferred temperatures we humans aren’t as fond of.
