Hi guys! Im Tiny from the Philippines. I just bought my rabbit, Snuggles, 1 week ago. I feed him with pellets bought from the shop and a steady dose of “Kang-kong” which can be found in abundance near my home. Only just 2 days ago did I notice something from Snuggles. If you watch the vid here and here, you can find Snuggles acting as if he is throwing up. Some said he is “choking”. And he keeps doing it till now, CONTINUOUSLY. He sleeps, he eats well, he drinks well. Is this related to breathing? Choking? Or is it normal? He is still a baby, and I get worried by just looking at him. I don’t know whats wrong. Help me guys. T_T
First thing to me, is he is way too young to be separated from his mom, but there is nothing you can do about that at this point.
I’m not familiar with this vegetable but I would say he’s too young to be eating greens. Can you get him fresh hay and what kind of pellets do you have.
Lastly and MOST IMPORTANTLY – I would have a vet do a thorough exam on your baby rabbit – the choking definitely does not look normal or good to me.
Oh dear, this doesn’t look good at all I’m sorry.
He is acting like something is stuck in his mouth or throat
OR
he is mouth breathing which he should not be doing. He really needs vet treatment. I know it’s difficult to find vets with good rabbit knowledge where you live. Do you know if any?
If you post which Province you live in, we may be able help look online.
Is it hot where you are? Rabbits don’t do well in the heat. You can cool him down by putting wet clothes in his ears.
He also looks like he has wetness or stuff around his nose. Make sure it is cleared away so the bunny can breath better. These things are a sign of respiratory infection and Snuggles will need to see a vet.
Sarita, I think it’s a type of water spinach and commonly fed to rabbits in Asia. Hay is scarce in the Philippines I believe. It can be ordered online from suppliers in neighbouring countries though.
I bought him from a nearby Province(I’m from Davao, bought him from Tagum). He was all alone for a week, according to the petshop keeper, so I bought him. Hay is not common here in the Philippines. I looked at the pellet brand but apparantly it was just a repack. If they have been feeding Snuggles for a week with this kind of pellet, I dont think it’s the problem though. Most probably I’d have a vet examine him maybe tomorrow. He is still doing it now. T_T

My dad also brought that up. He said there may be something stuck in his throat or something. Im from Davao, Philippines by the way. Any help with regards to nearby vets would be most appreciated. It is definitely hot here in the Philippines right now, but I make sure to keep Snuggles cooled. You are right, the wet nose thing might be connected to his ‘choking’ appearance. I’m having a vet see him soon, if I find any ![]()
Firstly his nose is red and wet, it looks like a discharge. I am guessing respiratory infection and a bad one. He is possibly struggling to breath. An immediate vet visit would be my next move, I would not wait to see how it goes because from the look of his nose it is advance and if he is struggling to breath it could be dire.
He needs to go ASAP. This is not good. He could be mouth breathing because his nose is so clogged of that gunk. Or because he has something stuck in his throat. But I’m guess its a respiratory issue because his nose discharge is reddish. Please do not wait… He needs to go. He may not be around til tomorrow. It’s to a point that its necessary. If you can’t find a rabbit savvy vet. a emergency vet can at least help a little by Maybe examine his throat to make sure he isn’t choking or clean out his nose to help a little with breathing. But get your bunny help quickly.
The Ark Veterinary Clinic in Davao has 24hr emergency. They don’t state exotics but have treated birds, reptiles and even a hedgehog so its likely they have an exotic specialist. http://www.thearkvetclinic.com/index.html
Looking for more
This page has several vets listed with phone numbers. Davao is right down the bottom but you might be close to some of the other regions. So far Ark is the only one listed as having an emergency service. http://www.pahanet.com/members
We have another member here who lives in Davao City. I’ve sent her a message in the hopes that she can recommend a vet. Fingers crossed.
{{{vibes}}} for Snuggles. He’s very, very cute. I just hope you can get him healthy again.
Oh my gosh, that poor baby! Like previously stated that bun looks too young to be away from momma bun. I really hope you can get it some help ASAP!
Vibes for the baby!
Hi Tiny, Have been keeping you and snuggles in my thoughts. Hoping everything turned out alright. If it didn’t please don’t avoid us there is only ever a small window of time when a bunny takes really ill to get treatment we are here to support you either way.
Hi guys. Thanks for the concern everyone. Just a quick update. Snuggles is still doing fine. I just accidentally opened the door on him(he likes hanging around doors) and now I think I strained his right hind leg(KILL ME NOW). I’m confining him in his box/cage overnight to avoid further injury. With regards to him “choking” habbits, it seems to be tuning down a bit though, unlike in the vid where he was clearly laboring. Mom decided we keep him here at home till Monday where I will take him to the Ark Vet. The 24-hour emergency service is so expensive so we decided to take the chance and see if Snuggles can fight through till Monday on a proper appointment. Now 7:30PM here, Sunday night, Snuggles is on my shoulders nibbling my ear as I’m typing this. I will update you guys tomorrow regarding his diagnosis and treatment, if there are any. Thanks for the concern guys. Much appreciated ![]()
It’s been a week now since I had Snuggles. Looking back at everything that has transpired, I would like to share to everyone that I got him from a petshop inside a mall. He was all alone in his rabbit pen when I first noticed him. I had the sudden urge to buy him out of sheer sympathy. I always wanted a rabbit, but I did not know they are this medium-high maintenance. Or maybe Im just a noob. I had guinea pigs once and they seemed fine when left alone. I agree with you guys here, for me, he is still too young to be separated from his mom. I’m glad I bought him rather than walking away from the petshop knowing that he’d be alone for longer(maybe till death). My dad also suggested that maybe Snuggles had these complications even before I bought him(Hence, why no one wanted him, in the first place?). Is it possible? Because I haven’t really been paying attention to every small details about rabbits until about the day I noticed he was “choking”. Now that I have studied a bit about them, I kind of get worried a lot now about every small thing that Snuggles does. I’m a nurse and I’m used to knowing a lot of info regarding diseases about my patients, but when it comes to my pets, I worry like a mom when I know too much. Everyone, please pray for Snuggles and his fast recovery. He is my first real baby(pet?). I want to care for him till he grows old and happy. ![]()
Keeping the vibes going for snuggles… Yes, they are a handful but they pay back everything with love… They are a joy to have. I hope you and Snuggles are together for many years. We are here to help you in anyway we can…
How is little snuggles doing today? You might want to think twice about caring for him if you aren’t able to afford the emergency vet?

As I said before, I bought him out of sheer sympathy because he was all alone in his pen. Little did I know the hurdles and obstacles were this challenging. Im up for it though. Me and my gf are cooperating on this whole endeavor. I believe we will be able to sustain Snuggles with medical exams and treatments, but if it becomes a usual routine, like if Snuggles gets sick often, I think I’ll have to give him to a friend who actually had bunnies in the past. For now, I’ll do my best to support him. Give me strenght, everyone ![]()

Hey Roberta! Thanks for the support. Snuggles is just resting beside me tonight. I do hope we can be together for a long while too. ![]()

How is his breathing today?
If I have to compare him to a person having an asthma attack, I’d say he is doing okay now. Calmed down a bit. I’m stil having him checked tomorrow morning though ![]()
Please keep us updated on your baby and let us know what the vet says.
Thinking of you and your baby. Sending good vibes your way!
How did things go with the vet ? Is Snuggles OK ?
Hi guys. Good news. Dr. Lao, the owner of Ark, examined Snuggles himself. He used a stethoscope to examine any respiratory infections first. No wheezes, crackles, or any unusual breath sounds. Just deep breath when he is inhaling. Which leads to his theory regarding irritated throat/airway which restricts the airway. I gave him a history of what Snuggles has been eating. I forgot to tell you guys that I fed him one time with “Humpay” grass, it’s a kind of grass loved by guinea pigs, and it has lots of hair, which ultimately irritated a Snuggles. He said adult rabbits have no problem with this type of grass, but Snuggles is still a baby, so he definitely had some sort of allergic reaction. That was his theory. No abnormal breath sounds means no respiratory infections. He said to observe snuggles and NEVER feed him “Humpay” grass. I’ll stick with kangkong, petchay, cooked carrots, and his pellets for now. ![]()
Excellent news Tiny… Now of course you will have to send us lots of happy snaps of a healthy Snuggles.
What you reported was very odd (for some reason my browser doesn’t access the photo or video) because technically rabbits do not have reverse peristalsis so whatever he managed to choke out of the way, I am relieved to hear he choked away. . . . Yes, rabbits are very delicate and very different—all of us, I think, are always learning (including, most especially, the vets!) and it is our close calls and tragedies with our rabbits which is how some very hard lessons are learned. But that is the value of life–that you love and have empathy. It was a wonderful thing you gave him a home. I do hope everything works out. Makes me mad someone took him away from him mom too early!
I’m glad to hear your bun is alright now. ![]()
