I was In the pet shop today and naturally I went straight for the rabbit section . Possibly the biggest mistake of my life because there were about 5 or 6 absolutely adorable little bunnies, I think they were mini lops but they were so tiny, they would have been lucky to have been 8 weeks old the poor little things should probably still be with their mum But I am sooooooooooooo tempted to get one! They were mainly white and grey colours but there was this little one that had little black spots on it, so cute!!

Im hoping to go back tomorrow with mum, I guess if they are still there then I am meant to have one…or something like that Im sure maisy needs a friend anyway hehe

Ill let you know what happens!

          Hi Georgia
I know what you mean about big mistake. I had to completely avoid going into petshops after I got my first rabbit because she was an impulse buy.

Do be careful because often pet shop rabbit can carry illness (any new rabbit for that matter) so you put your other one at risk. It can also become expensive quickly if they’re ill. One of the reasons they do poorly is for the very reason you mentioned. They’re away from the mother too young. It’s actually illegal in Australia for them to be sold younger then 8 weeks, so if you do go back ask how old they are. Be interesting as to what they tell you.   The other thing to be careful about is the sex of the rabbit. So often the gender is mistakenly identified.

You mentioned in that Other Pets thread that your family does a lot of fostering for RSPCA? Maybe you could look into fostering of adopting their rabbits instead. Its more common to see cats and dogs come through shelters but rabbits are certainly out there needing new homes.

Lol. The big mistake that I make is occassionally looking at the bunnies on our local shelter’s website. Every now and then I see a picture and read a story and almost have to be forcibly restrained from going out there to rescue them. If I had some place bigger than an apartment where a thrid (or fourth) bunny could live away from Kate and Spence… I probably wouldn’t be able to resist.

Those baby lops are really tempting!! I know how you feel (I have two lops myself, so baby lops are my Achilles heel!)

I agree with Jersey that you should check out bunnies in shelters. Getting a second is *such* a commitment – bonding is so much more stressful than I ever considered. I would definitely think about it really hard and plan if you want to bring a second bunny home. If you decide getting a baby bunny is right for you, then you can see what happens!

I don’t want to be a downer, because baby loppies are the cutest things ever! But if you’re going to go into pet stores you’ll have to get good at resisting them 😉

My second bunny was an impulse buy. I try to avoid petshops now, too.

And speaking of gender mistakenly identified. The pet store owner said he thought it was a boy. Well, Thor came back from the vet as Esmeralda.

Yeah I know I really need to stop looking because I always see cute bunnies…im kind of worried actually because we will be going to the RSPCA soon to take some puppies and kittens back and they pretty much always have bunnies there…they are just so adorable!! Its not fair!!

Are you able to volunteer with the bunnies? Not sure if it will work for you, but for myself I find that spending time helping the animals get adopted (cleaning cages, walking dogs, etc) helps me get past the “Omg, they’re so cute I want one!” thinking. I get to spend plenty of time with cute animals, but then I feel really happy when they find new homes.
