› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › So Nervous! The big day has arrived!
We’ve been so excited, and so happy and could not WAIT for this day to hurry and get here, and now that it’s here I’m so hesitant to bring Bugsy in to get neutered. I keep asking myself if I’m doing the right thing ( of course I am)… I keep wanting to change my mind because ‘what if’ somthing happens? I’d rather have him be aggressive than end up having complications from the surgery… but, he’s SO stressed and it’s hard for any of these kids to go by him because he bites. He bit a 2 year old on the heels 4 times in 1 minute… literally attacked him. But he’s so sweet when he wants to be and I don’t want him to feel like I don’t love him but putting him t hrough all of this. I know in the long run everything will be better but it’s just the thought of what will happen post-surgery.
Anyone else have this problem?
I understand your nervousness. It is as you say though, better for the long term for Bugsy and your family. Any discomfort he might feel plus your own nerves will be a temporary thing. As for complications…are you talking about directly after surgery or after when you have him home?
Either way, with vigilant care givers (vet staff or yourself) he really is in the best position to have anything that crops up seen to asap.
You can expect him to be a bit drowsy and not want to eat much. He might have some swelling also and I’ve read you can apply a warm compress. Check with your vet on the after care so you feel more prepared and less nervous.
Haha, I must come back and remind myself of these things in about a months time. I haven’t had a male bun neutered before but am to soon. I’m also experiencing that “waiting for that day to arrive already” V’s “aw, I don’t want to leave him at the vet” & the nervousness in general.
Yeah, I hate it. It gets really bad when the day comes. I just dropped him off a little while ago and started crying afterwards lol. I had to sign a form that said I understand he can die or become brain dead from the anesthesia but the hospital will do what they can to give him the safest treatment possible, after I walked out I cried because he doesn’t know anyone there, it’s his 2nd time at the vet, etc. I just hope he’ll be okay- I’m suppose to go pick him up around 1pm or so… ugh. I feel so bad for doing this to him though. But yeah, just remind yourself, it’s all better for him.. he won’t be as stressed out in a few weeks after. My bun gets bad if he rubs his chin on your foot, and then you walk away– because since he claimed it as his, he didn’t want it to move, and he thumps and gets REALLY frustrated over the dumbest things– it’s so cute, but it’s so bad for him.
Anyways I hope your bunny heals great and everything goes good for him too
Thanks! I hope the same for Bugsy.
It’s odd, because I’ve had a female rabbit spayed which is the more complicated surgery. I don’t think I was aware of that at the time. And my girl came through it really well. So I shouldn’t feel nervous for the boy buns. But as you know, logic and your heart are not always on the same wave length.
In my experience, the healing process can bring you two together even more.
It’s totally natural to be nervous for him, but try not to be. Neuters are so easy! And rabbits respond to anesthesia in a different way than us. Almost as soon as they stop administering it, the rabbit can wake up. Their bodies are able to kick it out so quickly. Whereas we might take a few hours or even a full day to not feel so loopy, they are aware upon waking. This is cool because at any point during the procedure, they would be able to wake him up AND there won’t be any lasting effects once he’s up. V, my little 1 lb Netherland mix has been put under anesthesia 5 times and he’s not even a year old. I worried every time, but you would never know he’s been through what he’s been through!
Fatality rate in bunnies is very low on spay/neuter – it isn’t as invasive as a spay so he should be FINE! And if he’s like my girl, he’ll just want pets and attention to make him feel better once he comes home and it will make him even friendlier. ![]()
I hope all goes well and a speedy recovery for your little man. Gabby got spayed over a month ago and had no problems and is sweeter than before.
Thank you all
I have to go pick him up anytime now, they said to wait, and if I don’t get a call by two, for me to call them. So I’m hoping there are no problems and that he wakes up fine. We re-did his entire cage… brandnew cage liner, washed everything. I can’t wait to see him– lol, I feel like he’s a part of my family..well, he IS, I just never knew I’d feel so strongly for him… Thank you all for the reassurance
I just called them, and they said that he is doing just fine, the surgery went great, he is resting in recovery right now and that because it’s the first time he was put to sleep, they don’t want to let him go until around 4pm-5pm. But that’s good news though ![]()
Glad everything went great.
I know I’m going to be bawling after I let them have my bunnies to spay them. ![]()
Yeah it’s hard to explain how it feels but the feeling you get when you get them back, is priceless. I got him and he was drinking his water, he’s been a good boy and not bothering the stitches, he’s walkin around, got in his litterbox ok, I put veggies on his cage and he went right up and ate them… they sedated him by mask just in case there was something wrong they could remove the mask and he’d wake up. They gave him torb/val for pain ( I’m not sure exactly what that is) and an emergency number, everything I needed to pretty much leave except for detailed after-care instructions– but that’s what this website is for!! ![]()
I’m glad he’s doing well after the surgery. I worried big time when Gabby was in for her spay. I had not had her that long when I had her spayed. It’s made her even sweeter now. She’s a big part of the family already.
I cried too when I left Indy to get neutered. I was so worried! He did great though and it was hard trying to keep him “quiet.” I had ordered him a box of goodies from BB and he was jumping into the 2 foot tall box to eat the fresh mini bales I had bought…. thank goodness he didn’t pop the glue open on his boy parts!
I am glad he is doing well, you should see him good as new I bet in the morning! Just keep that litterbox nice and clean!
@brittbritt Thank you, I’ve only had him about a month too.. so hopefully it makes him sweeter
@Lintini Yeah, Bugsy won’t stay ‘quiet’ either… he wants to hop around and play, he doesn’t get his pain medicine again until 2am, poor baby– I can tell he’s in pain but he won’t slow down! lol
The absolute most hard thing about all of this, is giving him his medicine. Both times I’ve bawled now. The 2nd time, he kicked his legs a little and he was staring at me, scared, his eye bulged and went blood shot and I just lost it. I don’t want him to be in pain anymore, I feel SOOO bad for doing it… he sat in my arms for about a half hour after I gave him his pain meds… I hand fed him parsley and cilantro and gave him his water… It’s HARD stuff… but I know it’ll all be worth it.
