Snuffles

So, Red came into our lives in May this year and with him he brought Snuffles, something which I knew nothing about, he was on medication but it never really went away, he always sounded snotty when breathing but apart from that he seemed fine after the meds.

I had Cinders checked over numerous times for assurance that she hadn’t got it. Every time the vets said there were no signs (most recently after Red had died ) despite me saying she sneezes most days – But she has always been a sneezer.

After Cinders getting a clean bill of health from the vets I took on Frank and bonded them, they have been living together (indoors) for a couple of weeks now. On Saturday night we (Me and my bf) went to Wrexham for the night, so the bunnies went to Muriel’s house (my Bunny sitter) where they were outside over night. I picked them up teatime yesterday and Cinders did a few sneezes over the course of the few hours I was in the room with them. As I walked over to the same side of the room as her I could hear her breathing, snotty like Red used to do, I picked her up and couldn’t see any gunk in her nose but there was a tiny slither of moisture between her nose and mouth.

So now I am obviously concerned that this has been there a while and that Frank is going to get it and i’m never going to get rid of Red’s legacy. although I miss Red dearly and would do anything to have him back, I don’t want this as a reminder of him!

Some wetness is very normal and nothing to be concerned about If she is having trouble with sneezing often, it could be a few things. It could be allergies; maybe shes allergic to something in your house. She may be allergic to her hay or litter. It could be that her nose is sensitive so she sneezes whenever loose fur, hay dust, litter dust, or just dust in general passes by her nose. One thing to try is turn on a hot shower and go into the bathroom with her. The steam will help loosen any stuck mucus she has in her nose

Maybe, I’m probably just thinking the worst as usual but I’ve read how difficult it can be to get rid of once it sets in so guess I’m on high alert all the time. I’m convinced his Snufflesplayed a part in his early demise which doesn’t help my paranoia

Its understandable. One of my bunnies who has allergies had snuffles before. After a week or two of antibiotics, he was all better. But we were told he will be prone to getting it unless we keep up nebuliser treatments and we need to make sure to remove as much dust around him as possible. Every time he sneezes more than normal, or his nose is greener than normal, i get paranoid and start to watch him like a hawk

I would try to make sure she has as little dust in her cage/pen/play area as possible to see if that helps

Snuffles is generally caused by a pasturella strain, which, according to any of the vets I’ve seen, is a normal part of most rabbits flora and fauna.
The problem with this strain is that once the immune system is in anyway compromised, it has a chance to take root. Some rabbits will never have it, some will always battle with it.
I have one bunny that’s symptomatic, and one that is not.
But it sounds like Cinders may have some form of allergy? Or fur irritation?
Some rabbits will have moisture on their nose from time to time and it’s not that bad to deal with.

She has never been like this before in the almost 4 years I’ve had her, that’s what concerns me. Especially since everywhere says that Snuffles is highly contagious
