        Hello,

My rabbit has had the sniffles for over 2 weeks now. I’ve been to the vet and got some antibiotics which I tried giving him in via syringe which just didn’t work out well, anyways I got more antibiotics ‘baytril’, I’ve been using this for 3 days and still no improvement. He is still sneezing and a little bit of white discharge comes out when he sneezes. I’m extremelu worried.

Has anyone used Baytril and how long does it take to work!?

Baytril is a broad spectrum antibiotic that’s often first choice for snuffles. many., many of our members have used it with their buns. It’s effective against the bacteria that most commonly cause snuffles – pasteurella and bordetella and pseudomonas.

It is very common for snuffles patients to require several weeks long courses of antibiotic treatment. If Baytril doesn’t do the trick, it can be combined with for example penicillin injections (penicillin can never be given by mouth to rabbits). It can be a week before you see real improvement, but if your bun gets worse, you should contact your vet. Signs of snuffles getting worse are, for example, wheezing breathing sounds, bun sitting with it’s chin up and breathing through it’s mouth (rabbits should only ever breathe through their noses) and/or frequent head shaking or head tilt. Also keep an eye on appetite and poop. You can supplement his diet with a probiotic (benebac is a much used brand) because antibiotics are tough on the gut microorganisms and rabbits have senitive tummies.

            Thank you for the reply.

He’s still eatting and drinking totually fine. He does shake his head sometimes but not too much to be concerned, I’ve heard him weezing but it’s when he starts sneezing and then it stops. His condition has not worsen but nor has he got any better. I’ve tried using probiotic in his water but then he stopped drinking so I stopped. I’ve also purchased some immunity biscuits which he likes. And I’ve just recently purchased Echinacea leaves but still waiting to be delivered.

I will take him back to the vets but I don’t know when, it’s been nearly over a week and still nothing.

I would call the vet and ask. You ought to have seen at least some improvement by now. There are decongestants that are safe for bunny use, for example bromhexine. You could ask your vet about that too, just to help making the snot less thick ad easier to get out.
