Sneezing, Greenish/yellow Nose

Hello everyone.

I adopted two dutch babies two weeks ago. They are now pushing 11 weeks old. Harley has been sneezing since then. in the past week we have been to the vet 3 times with them. They went for a checkup and the doctor believed it was just allergies to a new home with our other pets. over the weekend we noticed them have a clear runny nose but greenish/yellow around their noses (Harley more so than Quinn). unsure if it was from the Alfalfa hay or not, we took them again to be checked. they were put on antibiotics and we will be going on day 4 this evening with it. Quinn seems to be improving but Harley I’m not so sure. Both girls are very active running around. I’m just nervous with the Harley still having the clear discharge and the greenish yellow around her face. Last night I saw she had extra white in a few of her poops and urine. I understand the calcium can be high with them being on Alfalfa hay. I’m just very worried about Harley. We just changed their boxes, food and water last night and she seems to be slacking in eating and pooping. She has pooped, don’t get me wrong, just not as much as I think she has. We were just at the vet for a follow-up yesterday with the doctor saying to keep an eye more so on Harley.

It’s possible the prescribed antibiotic is working better on one than the other. Depending on their immune systems and how they’re reacting to the new environment, it could be Harley’s immune system is weaker, or the infection he has is more aggressive, or perhaps even a completely different type.

Nevertheless, it’s unusual for sneezing to go away in less than a week of treatment, so continue giving the medication. Tell your vet about how each rabbit is doing individually, and it could be that Harley needs a different medication or combination than Quinn does. I’m unsure of your vet’s experience with rabbits, but Wick had the following medications prescribed: 1) Bactrim, 2) Baytril, 3) Flocillin (penicillin). Bactrim was prescribed first, but it didn’t help so Wick was switched to Baytril. This helped a little bit, but we added on Flocillin injections and he got much better. It took about 3mo of treatment with these antibiotics to have Wick be healthy again. This is longer than the norm though because he had a very pesky infection that was extremely resilient.

Some things which could help is 1) making sure the full dose is always given, 2) whether it’s once or twice a day, make the administration regular and routine (every 12 hrs, every 24 hrs, etc..), and 3) make sure you’re alwayss using clean towels, wipes, syringes, etc.. when interacting with their noses/mouths.

You have no idea how happy you made me just feel hearing it takes awhile.  When our vet said 48 hours and its been 5 days on the second antibiotic with no change I have been going into panic. I plan on calling the vet in the morning to do a culture and sensitivity test on Harley since she seems to show no improvement. Thank god, Quinn stopped the discharge, she sneezes on occasion but not nearly as much as Harley. I just want our girls healthy. I tried switching her hay to a different brand today from Oxbow alfalfa to Kaytee’s alfalfa. I don’t know how much it helped, if any, I think it may be worse. I’m off all week so I have been monitoring her pretty close. One positive thing is even though she has a runny nose, it is clear when we wipe it for her. It’s not green when we wipe it. I think it may be her having the runny nose and digging in the hay. She does love her hay, shes eating, drinking, pooping and running around.

Antibiotics take awhile to work. The yellow/green color could be hay dust mixing with a clear discharge. It isn’t unusual for that to happen. Have you considered another type of hay? Orchard perhaps?
