Sneezing and slightly runny nose

Hi there, recently I noticed Ivory starting sneezing sometimes, no runny nose or anything. I didn’t think it was much as, it’s molting time and my rabbits would sneeze around that time as well. But today I noticed she was just a little bit wet around the nose, it’s really thin and clear… I have her on our porch, with me watching, for some sunshine. I’ve heard about snuffles so I’m slightly panicked. Our garage is dusty, is it just because of that? I’ve been trying to air it out…

Please help!

UPDATE: oh no, a little bit of white has come out, still thin but, no longer clear! No vets are open sine it’s Sunday, what do I do!!! PLEASE HELP!

It sounds like an upper respiratory infection, known as a URI. If that’s the case, I would monitor symptoms until you can get your rabbit to a vet during the week. Wick had a URI and his along with other URI stories typically do not end after a day of no treatment. Make sure he continues to eat and poop until then! If the snot gets crazy, help your rabbit by wiping it with a soft, clean towel.

A URI cab be dormant in a rabbit and then show symptoms when a stressor occurs, or a URI can be caught like other illnesses. Is there anything stressing that has happened recently?

Hi Wick, thank you so much for responding!! I thought as much with the symptoms that she has, what did you do until you could get to e vet? So far she seems a LOT better, I have her in our bathroom with water, lettuce and a puppy pad. Nothing dusty, I also have a fan going. She ate all the lettuce and pooped once, she seems normal and breathing has gotten much better. We’ll be taking her to the vet tomorrow. Cleaned up the mucus and no more has come out.

Stress, huh. She was moved into the garage but then was almost a month ago….would that affect her?

Update: she went the bathroom, peed and pooped? The pee was an orangey color, she had had a carrot she it was probably because of this, but just thought I would let you know…

From me noticing Wick sneezing until I brought him to a vet (1 week observation), his sneezing got more frequent. In terms of activities, he was healthy. He’d just wake himself up with sneezing, poor thing. He’d have a sneeze fit at least once every 15 minutes. I delayed going because I too wondered if it was dust from the new environment (we had just brought him home at that point).

It could be the garage move, but it’s more a thinking point for you. For Wick, I believe it was getting to a new home which triggered it. A garage is a new environment with a host of new airborne items and noises, so there’s a lot of things that could have caused it environmentally or psychologically.

Orange pee is quite normal, even without a carrot. Wick’s pee is usually orange and he doesn’t eat orange food. It’s just a natural pee color for them!

Just saw the whistler breathing.

While Wick was going through the URI he was the most vocal rabbit. I didn’t know until after he got over it that the noises were all the result of clogged nasal passages.

If you’re hearing actual difficulty breathing, then a vet is more urgent. Wick made noise, but he was getting air through.

If you’re hearing whistling because of snot in the nose, it’s a livable with symptom until he gets to a vet

Think of when your nose is clogged when you’re sick. If you breath through it, you’ll hear a sound sometimes.

Okay good, just making sure! Yeah, she does get stressed easily so this very well could be the cause.

Yes, luckily that has stopped. It happened just before the mucus came out, so I think it was less difficulty breathing and more like blowing her nose. Even so, I’ll still be taking her to the vet! What should I expect when taking her tomorrow?

Depending on your vet, they may have a culture done to determine the exact infection (if there is one). My suggestion is even if you are having a culture done, start on an antibiotic to see if there is relief of symptoms. Cultures take time and can be unreliable (false negatives).

Typical antibiotics to test are Baytril and Bactrim.
