Smith has me worried

My Flemish Giant Smith was fine all day yesterday, I’d been out and about watching them all day since it was pretty hot but at 9 I went to feed them their dinner and she was wheezing and a bit wet around the eyes.

 

I had looked it up right away to see possibilities, I had wondered if she was startled or hyperventilating, I did accidentally startle her awake, once she relaxed it became much harder to hear but with my head right by her I could still hear a very slight wheeze. She has clean fresh water and has been eating, drinking, pooping etc.

 

I left her to check in this morning and again she was wheezing and wet around the eyes, but much less than last night but still noticeable. Everything I’ve read seems more like it would have a less sudden onset so I’m quite confused. I used to work at a vet but never worked with rabbits, but I do know when things are not right with any of my animals.

Do they generally get sick quicker than cats and dogs? She was completely fine all day yesterday, she was a bit lethargic but it was also 25 plus degrees Celsius and everyone else was lazing around, she really sounds like shes congested.

It can certainly seem that way. They are very apt at hiding illness so by the time we’re seeing symptoms, often things have progressed quite a ways.

I sort of think of it like on a scale of 1-10. The higher end of the scale being the more severe. As bunny owners, we might only just be picking up on something being wrong when a rabbits already at 7.

The lethargy you’re describing is worrisome. And resp symptoms. Hope you can get bun in to be seen. Sending some {{{vibes}}} for Smith.

Her breathing has improved a bunch, I talked to my vet and we decided for me to keep a close watch on her, I’m going to be making some changes to her crate and possibly moving her to a different location, she wheezes slightly when she gets stressed rather than wheezing at rest now so I’m very happy with that. I fed her lots of my fresh sage since it helps relieve inflammation, though I honestly cant say if it did anything other than give her a good amount of nutrients!

Its very frustrating because she isn’t very human friendly yet since I’ve only had her for a little while but once shes over this we’re going to have some intense bonding time because its awful trying to deal with a sick skittish bun!

Also! I forgot to mention, she isn’t as lethargic either, shes been stretching her legs a bit in her outside crate, hopping about then stretching out and relaxing with her frozen water bottle
