small poops? not eating normal? sleepy?HELP!!

Smokey usually eats his veggies every morning but the last two days he hasn’t been finishing. He gets two green leaf and some carrot slices. The day he started to not finish them I had given him veggies from the fridge that had been prepared the day before, They were cold and dry.

 He then only ate half and finish the rest later in the day, But then what I really noticed was he didn’t finish his pellets till about 6:55pm and he gets them around 10:00 in the morning! He gets 1/8 of a cup twice a day at 10am and at 9pm. The only thing he seems to be eating a lot of is his alfalfa, He really likes the little leafy bits so I gave him a ton of those. Then this morning when I went to feed him his veggies (fresh this time) I noticed that his timothy rack was still full, He always eats that during the night And he only ate three small pieces of veggies he didn’t even want to smell his carrots! I looked in and by his litter box and I saw some small poops about half the normal size and they looked kind of wrinkly (if that makes any sense).

 Could this be early GI stasis? Could It be the veggies were to cold? He also seems to be sleeping a little more that usual. Please help!  I’m starting to worry about the little guy! Thanks!

Yes seek a vet. Also, don’t give carrots every day. They are high in sugar.

Hi twinsie! I had similar issues with Corrin last month, she had some small poop mixed in with normal poop. Is this the same case? When Smokey is sleeping, is he in a hunched position or does he seem fairly comfortable? What kind of veggies are you giving him?

What I found was that there was too much alfalfa in Corrin’s diet (she is 5 months old now) and once I cut out the alfalfa pellets, hay, and apples, she was all better. Corrin gets about a cup of veggies in the morning and night and usually eats some, takes a break, then finishes later..she usually leaves the spinach for last. Also, sometimes giving her a new place to explore to make her move around helps too, she usually works up an appetite.

Ya I thought about that. He’s a sugar junkie now, also Im only giving him timothy now since alfalfa is higher in sugar.

Haha yes twins!  Is a hunched position when they pull there feet in? And look like a little ball of fur right? If so then yes. I think he’s had to much sugar (Alfalfa/carrots). I put just timothy in his cage now, he doesn’t seem to happy about that. I’m also massaging his tummy (Is it suppose to feel a little stiff?) I tried to give him pineapple juice drop by drop no thanks to his help  he hasn’t eaten much today so I’m going to had feed him and if it gets worse ill see about taking him to the vet. He stretch out once I had gave is tummy a massage (although he seemed made at me). Ill keep you guys updated thanks for the advice!

For our Bug when he was dealing with not being able to poop at all even after the vet gave him a few days of motility meds, we got him eating and drinking by using canned pumpkin, and watering it down, then feeding it by syringe. When we started we couldnt add much water, but the pumpkin is very high in fiber and has water already. We were able to pull Bug through with this and some pedolyte mixed water, but have to remember it has sugar too so we got him eating hay again as soon as he was up to it, and kept watering the pumpkin down to give him extra water. Eventually he slowly started pooping again.

Anyway, for us pumpkin was an extremely useful tool for his issues. I hope your bun starts feeling better soon!

You need to see a vet. His problem probably came from his diet, but he will likely need veterinary care to solve it. He sounds like he is in pain with gas and/or stasis. Pineapple juice does nothing and shouldn’t be given.

Is there an emergency vet in your area who knows rabbit medicine? If so, I hope you’ve taken Smokey to him by now. It does sound like he’s having a diet-related issue that needs vet assistance to sort out; you might try @JuJooGuppy’s suggestion and offer him some pumpkin mixed with water in the meantime. I had a minor scare Friday night when Panda seemed to be less interested in the shared evening salad than usual, but it turns out she was just feeling finicky and likely wanting some extra attention since she ate everything else (hay, treats) with the usual enthusiasm and she bounced right back to normal after I offered her some greens by hand, which ended up causing her to binky!

My pumpkin suggestion was definitely meant as a placeholder / follow up (with vets permission) to a vet visit. When in doubt, its better to be safe. Definitely find a vet you trust going forward, too.

THanks I didn’t know about the pumpkin! Ill keep that it mind! He is all better as of now, I gave him a little pineapple juice and with in the hour he was jumping around and eating! Thanks!

Well he is better now, and as for pineapple juice what is does is not dissolve the clog but support the digestive system, helping for the clog to pass through. I gave him that and he started eating again within an hour. I also gave him tummy massages and that seemed to help. Thanks for the reply! 

ps. I agree it was his diet, to much sugar!

He’s back to himself again! gave him a bit of pine apple juice and took away all sugary foods and he’s doing fine! Thanks for everyone’s help!
