Small feces

I hope someone can help me! I got my bunny in Feb. of this year and she has been awesome aside from the fact that she still doesn’t want me petting her.

Lately I have noticed her poops getting smaller. It seems as if she is pooping the same amount as normal, they are just very small.

She seems to be eating normally. I can’t tell if her energy has changed because she hides under my futon most of the time.

She does have her own little area I just don’t like keeping her locked in there so I keep the gate door always open because I completely bunny-proofed my living room.

She still comes up to me when I give her treats once and a while. I don’t give her too many.

She always has fresh water and hay in her area 100% of the time.

I am so worried about her. We just lost my childhood dog to cancer last weekend, so as you can imagine I am completely freaking out over this. I am having a hard time so I really hope someone can help me.

I don’t have the funds to go to the vet. until next weekend so I’m hoping there is something I can do at home to help this.

Regarding your rabbit’s small poop – generally smaller poops indicate less hay consumption and/or less water intake. Is this a possibility ? I personally don’t think you need a vet visit yet because she’s still pooping plenty you said, so that’s good  I would encourage you to see if she is lethargic at all. Will she come out when called or offered a treat?

Having said all that, my boy bun has fluctuating poop size ALL THE TIME  and he’s perfectly healthy, I can’t seem to pinpoint the cause. He doesn’t exhibit other signs though. I’ve had him for over a year so I know what’s normal for him.

As this is a new thing I would definitely keep an eye on her. Keep an eye on her hay and water intake in case that has decreased. If it hasn’t decreased, then we can try to explore other ideas.

Did you recently change to a different hay? I believe some hays will result in smaller poops. I could be wrong though.

Ditto, Sarah. Fluctuations seem normal for some buns. But increasingly smaller, dryer, less poops is a serious issue and requires a vet. Kind of gross, but my vet taught me to flatten a fresh poop with your fingers (I suggest putting a bag over your hand to lessen the yuck) and see it’s composition. A fresh poop should be smooshy and moist. If it’s dry and crumbly, that is a concern as it could lead to stasis. You can also see if there is a lot of hair in the poops by doing this.

Is your bun shedding? Ingesting too much fur is a common cause of smaller poops. If she is make sure to groom her thoroughly everyday.

Oh of couse, if the amount of poop decreases, it’s time for a vet but OP said the quantity hasn’t changed at the mo

Also just to clarify, I know you said she comes when called and will accept treats but as you were concerned that she was hiding out under the futon, that’s why I suggested just checking she’s not reluctant to move (and also wasn’t sure when she last accepted a treat)
