Hello everyone, Im Carlos and Im new here. Unfortunately I am writing because Im worried about my female rabbit. I couldnt find any post with the same issue, if there is so, please redirect me to it.

My rabbit Logan got spayed 2 weeks ago and the day after surgery she got 2 injections, one antibiotic and a painkiller. Now it seems the exact places where those 2 shots where applied are getting infected? It feels like something strange is growing on her skin and she seems to have lost some hair on that area.

I could check with the vet tomorrow but getting her to the vet was a terrible trauma she is still recovering from. She used to be fun and loving and after surgery she was hiding from me for a week, only now we are starting to become friends again and I wouldnt like to give her another trauma just to find out its a normal reaction to the shots. She is moving around and eating and only sometimes she pays attention to the skin. I attach a picture (sorry for the poor quality but she wont let me get closer).

Has anyone heard something similar before?

        Thanks for any help.

It does look like she’s had a bit of a reaction. Sometimes they can get “baytril burn” when injectable baytril causes a sore or ulcer, unfortunately. Was that the antibiotic she had? Some vaccines cause this also. It looks like she has a blister or some of the med was given between layers of the skin instead of under it. Do phone and report it to your vet, but I think it will just be a case of watching it closely and waiting for it to heal.

Were you given any oral pain medication to give her at home?
Hopefully she’ll be past this post-spay upset soon.

Yes, report report it to your vet, if they feel an extra antibiotic (oral or ointment) would be of use, they can prescribe that without you taking her in. Sometimes skin-bacteria hitch-hike on a needle and cause a local infection. You need to keep an eye on these sores, obviously.

Thanks for the quick replies, I do remember one of the injections didnt go in well, he had to try a couple times and the needle ended up completely bended so it could be that it was injected wrongly as you mention. Cant tell which medication she got, and I didnt give her any medication orally home. She only got those 2 shots the day after surgery.
I will call tomorrow morning first thing and see if any treatment is required or if they can take a look at her (even if she will hate me even more for taking her to the vet).
As soon as I find out what caused it and how its solved I will update in case anyone has a similar issue.

              Thanks!

You could ring and describe it and email them the photo. They can then tell you if she needs to be seen. Worth asking to see if you can save her the stress of another visit.
I did this after my first rabbit was spayed. I could see some of the blue internal stitches right at the end of her incision site. I rang and told them and they assured me it was okay and what to look for in case it became a problem.
