Hello everyone. I am new to this but looking for answers. My Bella is sick.  She is 8 weeks, sneezing, slight yellow discharge, been on baytril for 10 days now.  She is still very active, eating, drinking, pooping… I thought I would see more improvement by now.  Could poor conditions before we got her contribute to this? When I washed her feet tonight I noticed dirty mats between her toes.  Is it possible for her to be allergic to alfalfa hay or orchard grass?? Any suggestions and help welcome. Thx

What did the vet say? Sneezing and discharge could be a sign of bacteria like Pasteurella or something like a respiratory infection. You definitely need to get to the cause of it and make sure she is on the right antibiotic.

How long has your bunny been with you?

I do think that poor conditions before could result in this and not the hay. Sometimes it can take awhile and better care for these symptoms to clear up. I would follow up with the vet though and see if you can possibly do a culture or continue for longer with the baytril or another suitable antibiotic.

The vet hasn’t done culture tests yet. Since I washed her feet she seems to be a bit better. Still sneezing a lot. Only 2 more doses of baytril left. Hope she clears up. This is already the second round of meds. We have had them almost 3 weeks

Hey, I had the same issues when I brought Tsuki home from the gentleman I bought her from. My vet immediately put her on baytril for 2 weeks, the symptoms got better, but then reverted by the end of the 2 weeks. I took her back and my vet did a blood test with the results being pasturella. We immediately started her on a higher dose of baytril and penicillin shots every other day. She had to be weight checked every week to alter her doses since she was growing pretty rapidly. We finished the pen shots and kept her on baytril for a few more weeks. When Tsuki decided she no longer wanted the baytril, I stopped (she took it very easily up to then) and waited to see if it came back. Thankfully it hasn’t (chalking it up to her young bunny immune system), but the vet warned it is a possibility it could come back or it might not.
it’s a very scary thing to go through, but with lots of love and attn your bun should be ok. If you have other buns you should keep them separate, because it is contagious (and very rarely humans can get it to from what my dr said)

                Hope this helps a little!

Here are a couple good articles about respiratory infections and culture tests:

                  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/culture.html

It’s good that she’s on medicine, but it’s possible that the baytril isn’t effective against what she has. There are other medications to try, and that’s where the culture test comes in, to find out what will be most effective.

Finish up this round of meds and maybe contact your vet on Monday and see where he/she wants to go from here.

                  I hope she feels better….

Bella update. I had her back to the vet today. Even though she is sick, she gained some weight! Thank goodness. We did a culture to see what exactly we are dealing with. Should have results in a few days. In the mean time she is on double the original dose of baytril, medacam, and saline neubulizing. She is still in great spirits, running, eating, playing, and pooping so the vet is hopeful. He also checked her teeth which turned out to be fine. I’ve noticed though that she is dosey. Is this normal?

The medicines are probably making her drowsy.
