Should I Spay My Buns?

Hi Everyone!

I joined this lovely site because I thought it would be nice to surround myself with people who value rabbits! 

Anyhow, my topic is pretty straightforward: I’ve got two lovely rabbits, Ruvik and Hazel, and they are two years old. I’ve got them since they were a few weeks old and they’re most precious to my heart.

I’ve read everywhere that female rabbits should be spayed before reaching the age of one year. Problem is, there is no rabbit savvy doctor where I live and the two clinics I’ve been to informed me that they could preform the operation, but it wasn’t reassuring so I opted for not doing it…

Mind you, I’ve lost two rabbits already because of vets ignorance, one was named Cole and he was really young. The other was called Leslie and she was Ruvik’s best friend, and I lost her last year (tearing up as I write this), she was only a year and a half

Plus, the doctors at both clinics told me that they aren’t experts when it comes to rabbits “but” they’ll do it. One clinic told me that they don’t have the proper equipment for a rabbit’s surgery. Twice. On different occasions.

I just don’t know what to do, I don’t wanna risk their lives with the spaying and at the same time I’m worried they’ll get sick in the future, I’m so torn.

Now with their ages, I’m worried about the anesthesia too.

What should I do??

No wonder you’ve been put off from having them spayed. When clinics say things like that, it make me think they’re encouraging owners to look elsewhere as they prefer not to do rabbit spays.
Some set exhorbitant fees also as a way to get owners to look elsewhere.

Would you consider travelling out of town and staying somewhere to have the girls done? This would make it more expensive, but you would have more confidence in the vet, which is important.

I would travel to wherever you need too to get them spayed by someone who understands rabbits. In my opinion, having rabbits spayed is non negotiable but I can understand why you’ve not gone down that route yet.

Are there any rabbit shelters in your area? Or even a veterinary university maybe? You could call them and ask about reliable vets

I would have travelled to do it but then again, no savvy vets …
And I don’t know of any shelters or veterinary university but I’ll try looking into it go sure.

I’ll go back to these clinics and hear what they have to say, I’ll also look for other rabbit caretakers around here who’ve done the surgery to their lovely fluffs.

I would give you my street address if I thought it helped lol  I’m thinking about reaching out and search for other rabbit lovers around here, maybe someone did have a successful surgery of their rabbit.
