Hey everyone. So I’ve been meaning to get a rabbit for about two years now. Recently met a new Zealand rabbit and fell in love. My only worry is that I will go on a one month trip abroad in January. I have family and friends who will do a very good job in taking care of him. I’ve read somewhere that for a rabbit to adjust and bond, they could take up to three months. Im worried that once he’s comfortable. I would end up leaving for my trip. Would that be too cruel? I just can’t stand the idea of him at the shelter. Would you advise I wait until after my trip to adopt? HELLPPPP.

It can take a long time, not just 3 months. Some bunnies take a year or more to fully open up and trust their human. Wait until after your trip. There are plenty of bunnies that need homes, and will still need homes when you’re back. You’ve waited 2 years, another 3 months isn’t the end of the world.

I have to agree with A&B here. We’ve had Ollie for almost 3 years and it’s only been in the last year that he has really started to trust us, I think with bunnies that come from shelters or that have had previous homes it does make it even more difficult to bond with them. Obviously, they will eventually open up, each in their own ways!

@ Vicki Q – But I think it is also best to wait, even though it may seem like not the best option in your mind! Sadly there will almost always be rabbits at shelters who need a loving home and a second chance, it’s of course your decision, but I suggest waiting until after you’re back from your trip. In my opinion if I had just gotten a new pet and had to leave for a month… I would be so worried about them & honestly it would most likely ruin my trip. I encourage you to think it over! You’ve already made a good decision by not just adopting the rabbit right away without thinking, so kudos to you for that. I hope this helps you in some way! Enjoy your trip!!!
