Shelter and rescue contacted me back…

I had emailed both a rabbit rescue and an animal shelter about bunnies they had on petfinder. The rescue emailed me back first and was really nice and said I could bring Gabby to pick her own mate. My daughter fell in love with the video of a bunny at the animal shelter and they emailed me back today saying our home sounded like a place that bunny would thrive in.

Now I don’t know what to do. Do I go and see if Gabby would take to the one at the shelter my daughter saw and liked? They have another male there too if she didn’t like my daughter’s favorite. Or do I go to the rescue that has several male bunnies we could try to pair Gabby with? I worry about shelters not being able to keep their animals as long due to overcrowding.

Rescues take them out of the shelters so you’re sort of aiding the resuce if you adopt direct from the shelter. One less for them to have to take in. Are the ones at the shelter neutered though?
Sometimes with bunny dating it can take the rabbit to meet a few before they start get the hang of it – so to speak. So you could even have her meet the shelter rabbits & meet some of the rescue rabbits just for socialisation. Then she could meet some candidates again & you might find their interaction different the second time around.

The lady at the animal shelter said to call her and she’d tell me all about Thumper, the one my daughter really liked. He’s about 6 months old and very energetic in his video. We have a long living room he could run through with Gabby. I’ll have to ask the lady if he’s been neutered yet or not. I know the adoption fee covers their animals being spayed/neutered.

I don’t think it would be accurate for Gabby to meet him if he’s not fixed yet as their personalities are different before and after. I’ll have to wait until I talk to her on the phone to make up my mind.

That does make sense for her to meet both rescue and shelter rabbits to get Gabby used to other buns jerseygirl.

Yeah…. a 6month old unneutered buck is gonna have one thing on his mind.
Although, you might find humping will happen with the neutered bucks or even from Gabby. When they meet it can be a weird combo or excitement and stress. (for the rabbits & humans. ;o) )
 

Some others have mentioned their rabbits didn’t know how to speak rabbit initially when doing introductions. I guess it can happen when a rabbit hasn’t had much interaction with others since weaning.  Gabby interacts with your other pets though doesn’t she? She might be a little socialite!

I have two dogs and a cat that she interacts with daily. One dog is about 70 pounds and the other is maybe 15 pounds. They will sniff her and then go on their way. She ignores them mostly. She is in love with my 13 year old cat Abby. Abby wants nothing to do with her and will run or walk away if Gabby tries to be near her.

If the rabbit she [your daughter] really likes is at the rescue, I’d go to the shelter first and see how those introductions go. This will give you a starting point as to how she acts around a variety of strange bunnies. Then go to the rescue and see if her reactions are any different. If she doesn’t care for any of the bunnies equally, that allows you the freedom to choose for her. Even buns who seemingly “fall in love” at a rescue, still require a bonding process of some sort when in their own space.

I spoke with the really nice lady at the animal shelter by phone this morning. She has five rabbits of her own and will bring home the shelter rabbits to help socialize and litter box train them as needed. She has to take her mother in law to a dr’s appointment right now but will give me a call when she’s fixing to drive back to the shelter.

She will stop by her house and pick up the other rabbit she’s just been working on litter box habits with so in case Gabby does not take to Thumper, my daughter’s favorite of all bunnies we’ve looked at, we can try her with Zak. I think both look like fantastic buns to adopt depending of Gabby’s choice.

So maybe this evening I may have another rabbit coming home with me. Please keep us in your bunny thoughts and *paws crossed* she hits it off with one of them. If she doesn’t then I’ll take her to the rabbit rescue and try her with their boy buns. But you never know Thumper or Zak may be the one.
