Hi, my bun is having poopy butt. I’ve read about it and it seems like my little one may have it due to not eating enough of her other type of poop. She is probably not eating enough of it because there is a screen mesh thing over her litter to keep her from digging up all her litter. Or could it just be that I’m giving her even more green because its very hot out side and i’m trying to keep her hydrated?

there is just now smeared poop all at the bottom of her ex=pen!

        what should I do?

she eats oxbow pellet and Tim Hay.

I don’t think the screen would matter because rabbits eat them directly from their body. It’s probably something else. The others will probably have more input. I have never had a rabbit with poopey butt.

Yeah I’ve never seen either of my buns dig in their boxes for those poops, hey usually eat them whilst chilling in the middle of the living room and they sit up to eat there…poop snack… Anyway! It could be the too much greens causing it or could be a tummy virus. I’d call your vet just to ask and be on the safe side.

I’m too lazy to type it out again, but there have been a lot of people writing in about this. It may switch around fast for you or could take some time to clear up, and you will end up having to be careful of her diet. My Gracie has battled this problem off and on since I got her in Oct. It’s pretty awful and she’s tiny. I think Moccasin is big?

Well, I would read up on this if it continues. There’s quite a bit out there and I got a lot of good advice on here. Gracie doesn’t get too much fresh food anymore. Dry treats, pellets and hay mostly, with some greens that seem to agree with her, like dandelions, but if it continues you will want to get her on mostly hay for awhile anyway.

I don’t believe it’s greens, it’s more likely pellets causing this as they are high in protein.

Also don’t think it’s a tummy virus, rabbits don’t really get a tummy virus.

Some rabbits just produce more cecals than others – it doesn’t usually have to do with diets – the truth is they will just eat what they need.

I guess then my question is… is the screen over her litter causing her to not eat the decals because they fall through and she can’t get to them..?

Mine usually eat theirs late at night and it looks like grooming, but they chew more than usual. They just.. lick themselves down there and get the cecals as they come out. It is quite neat and tidy. The one time Powder did produce cecals out and about it was due to stress from the vet and it smelled awful. I use litter screens and no problem at all. You can tell if they are dropping cecals into the litter box given cecals are small, soft, clumped together and smelly.
